I'm not sure how many of you do much propagation via cuttings, but I found something neat while shopping at canadian tire today. I haven't had a chance to try it out, but hey it's worth a try! they look like clear jell filled pudding cups sealed with tin foil. you stick a cutting in through the lid and watch it root. gel has hormones and all, you can reues it a few times. I'm thinking it will be good for neps, although I may get curious and look at experimenting with a few things like seeds and drosera or ping leaves. Just though you'd all like to know! Sib

Chances are the gel is agar-agar, also used for sterile tissue culture.

As I mentioned, I did root some rosemary quite well actually. I did find that it (the gel) tried to dry out quickly, I pulled a few cuttings that had gone bad, or that wern't gonna take, and through the little hole, the gel started to dry. I took a different pack, cut the top foil off and smothed the surface out, and have put some D. 'Martsons Dragon' leaf cuttings on it to see if I can get anything with that. Talking with Aidan about them, he siad the product on his side of the pond was bad with CPs, and In small print on the inside of the package it does state that it may not work with some acid loving plants. We shall see. They have been there a few days and are not shriveling, so that's something! I should mention that the cup is in a ziplock bag to keep humidity up. I will keep you guys posted. Sib

Hey sib, On the cpuk forum, you said you rooted neps cutting with gel, which kind did you actually used?
And does anyone know if they can use Clonex rooting gel for nep cuttings? It contains 4-indolyl 3-butyric acid

Sib
remember to quickly dip your cutting end into a very weak solution of bleach and water to clean off any micro-organism: dip and hold for 10 seconds (cut end plus as much of the rest of the stem), rinse with fresh warm water...dry off with clean sterile paper, than dip into agar.

I actually bought some, and the tiny print inside the box said it's not recommended for acid-loving plants...Tough luck
