so it seams pretty common that cephs will grow well for quite some time then just go downhill for whatever reason, i've seen it with some of our cephperts even... at any rate, what is the general concensus as to the best course of action when this happens? Sib

Downhill? As in they stop producing pitchers and make non-carny leaves?
When that happens, give them more light.

Ask five questions- 1) Is your soil right? I suggest 1 part peat, 2 parts perlite, one part 16 grit sand. I used to go with 1-1-1 but now I use 1-2-1 as it's airier and I'm thinking better (let the debate begin). I think the right soil depends on how high your pot is, and high high your water is. The closer the water is to the top of soil, the airer the mix you'll find works best for you. 2) Is the watering right? My pots are 4 inch (the blue one you see) to 6" (the large clear one)...a lot of my cephs are in foam cups...the bigger ones...which are 4.5 inches high. They sit in say 1/2-3/4 inch of water. I mist the big one and the 14 little ones (which are in one pot) periodically but not everyday. I top water them occassionally. 3) Is the humidity right? I cover mine in plastic using straws to support the plastic if they are cuttings or small...or even if they are big and look shrivelled...But the big one is not normally covered nor are the ones outside. 4) Is the light right? Putting some out in direct sun and they do fine (I acclimitize them over time) Normally mine are under flourescent lights. 5) Any grey mold? If yes, spray with "Defender". My plants from Cookes almost died until I found and applied this product. Don't be afraid to repot them, they are tougher then you might think. I've even got one I'm trying in 1 part live sphagnum and one part perlite....because I saw this- www.cpukforum.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=36117&st=0&gopid=270774entry270774 Don't be afraid to try new things (easy to say when you have some to spare). Photo One...larger ceph, no cover, sits in water. Mix is 1-1-1. Cuttings, plastic cover supported by straws...I think they are in 1-2-1 (I write the plant type and mix on the cup). Baby Cephs, not covered, raised up to be nearer to the light. I spray them with plastic spray bottle once/twice a day when I remember.

When mine go into "dormancy", I repot them. They always come back but maybe they would have anyway.

well here goes: 1) Is your soil right?it's a LFS, perlite mix with just enough peat in it to be dirty. It has done very well in that mix for months. And I have cuttings I've rooted at the corners of the pots that are doing well also. 2) Is the watering right? 3) Is the humidity right?it lives in a bag, as strange as that sounds, its how it was grown before me and how it was recomended to me also. and as such i keep 1/2" approximately of water in the bottom. It has been like this all the time in my care and has done well up untill recently. 4) Is the light right?its about 6 or 8" away from the light at most. i have changed nothing so far. 5) Any grey mold?I've constantly checked it for insects and mould and found none, but as a precaution ave sprayed it with 3 in 1 (has a insecticide/miticide/fungicide) with no change. it started wit the pitchers comeing on a regular basis and just not lasting as long as they should then they would die before fully inflated, now they just die often, though new growth points have showed up. my theory was to just dig it up and repot it, maybe even split it, but not being a cephenator, I thought i'd talk with the experts before I did anything drastic. Thanks Sib

Wow Syb yours looks awesome compared to my 3. I only have one that even remotely resembles yours only a little worse off than that. I have tried top water, tray method and well sorry to say outside in my bog (RIP to those 2). No luck here at all and I can't even get cuttings to root for them. I can get neps no problem every time I take a cutting but so far no luck with Cephs or Drosera. OR VFT for that matter. LOL
