Hi Doug - I'm glad to see the progress on your pings has not slowed in the least. The summer here has been so hot that I have had a difficult time keeping most of my plants alive. But my pings truck on through! Although I don't have anything as tricky to grow as you.

Nice seedlings DVG. Just getting some seeds was already a success. It seems a lot of my pings are not self-fertile

Thanks for the comments guys. looks like a little saguaro Haha Lloyd, you musta been wearing your ESP helmet because that's exactly what i was thinking. Nice seedlings DVG. Just getting some seeds was already a success. It seems a lot of my pings are not self-fertile Shoggoths, i've been thinking that ping pollen doesn't have a long shelf life, maybe one or two days at most. It seems that when the pollen is ready the stigma flap might not be quite receptive to receiving it or maybe even it's the other way around. (Might have to keep experimenting with these to say for sure) It's probably helpful to have more than one flower in bloom at the same time to increase the odds of getting viable seed. dvg

These two have now gone into their dormant habit. But the leaf pullings i took last year, from the two plants shown above, have mostly reawakened from their blissful mexi-ping slumber. dvg

Hi DVG - I like the bulbs on this species. Actually, I wonder if some of the Mexi pings from true botanical bulbs? Typically, Oxalis is considered to be the only dicot to produce true bulbs. But species like P. heterophylla and P. gypsicola may fit the botanical definition too if I understand their resting condition. I've never seen them in person though. Perhaps this is better for another thread, I don't want to hijack your thread showing off all of your great efforts. So, for now I'll just say - Nicely grown!

Hi Apoplast, Not sure exactly if these are "true bulbs" as you call them, though i have heard them referred to as "bulb-like" and "underground bulbs" before. Here is this year's production of flowers emerging from underground "bulbs" before the regular filiform growth gets growing up to speed. Didn't give these any water since they went dormant and was going to give them a splash of water last week to hopefully awaken them, but found they were both already pushing up flowers. dvg

Nice plant. Is the medium totally mineral based?

Nice plant. Is the medium totally mineral based? Thanks, the medium is very close to being totally mineral based, with perhaps a tablespoon of compost added into the mix. dvg

Some plants that started out as leaf pulls back in October of 2011, growing here in a 7" pot. Still a few more flowers coming on some plants, with the beginnings of narrower upright carnivorous leaves being made on some, which signals an end of flowering for some of the early birds. With this many flowers out now, the plan is to pollinate as many flowers as possible and see what shakes out germination-wise, with the hopes of growing out a few pots of unique seed raised P. heterophylla. dvg

Hi DVG - Good luck! If anyone can do it, I'd bet on it being you. What magic do you work with these pings? Mine always limp along and grow, all be it very slowly. Yours on the other hand seem to sprint to maturity and thrive like dandelions in my lawn. I'm just impressed.

Wow, this is a lot of flowers !!!
Great work there, especially with heterophylla, a no easy ping.
Good luck with pollination, I find it more difficult with hairy throat.
Do you have a 4 leave flower in there ? In the middle ?

Thanks guys,
Apoplast, not sure really, maybe just had the luck of growing them in conditions that were already mexi-ping favorable.
Shoggoths, I didn't notice that flower before, but it looks like it might be a four petal flower.
I'll have a closer look at the flowers later.

This rosette is just slightly recessed below the top of the growing media, and continues to get larger with each succeeding growth phase. Now i'm wondering if it will divide soon. dvg
