on another forum i'm on some guy had this as a substrate (quote) ''then filled it in with a soil mix of sphagnum moss, broken-up Styrofoam packing peanuts, and long-fiber sphagnum.''

Good for aeration & drainage but not for water retention.

know some really successful growers that just use straight sphagnum moss with ground up bits of Styrofoam for extra drainage. Its nice because it never compacts or holds water like perlite and there’s always TONES of it everywhere for free. Another plus is that there’s no dust or other problems like that with Styrofoam. Oh and it can be used in every kind of mix, clearly

styrofoam packing peanuts!!! Hmm...that depends on the grade. The only ones I have seen in packages I recieved are terrible. They become a soggy mush after being exposed to water...so I would avoid those.

The packing peanuts that turn to mush are probably the starch-based environmentally friendly version
