Hey everyone, I have some sphagnum moss (LFS) That I bought a while ago and it doesn't look or feel like high quality. I'm not sure if it will be ok for Nepenthes or Cephs. It feels a bit sharp and it isn't poofy and soft like it usually is, it is flat and spikey looking and in the bag there is different textures and different looking mosses. On the bag it sais woodland moss, and on the back of the bag it sais sphagnum moss. here is a picture: You can also see the different colours.

Perhaps it's just because it's a little bit dried out? I'm sure it'll look nice once it starts growing.

it'll start growing even after dried out??? I didn't know that... when I soaked it in water for 15 minutes it was still like that though.... So do you think that moss would be ok for cephs and neps?

even if there is sphagnum in there....it looks very very unpure. There are a lot of sticks and crap in there. But on first look...there seems to be a lot of other types of moss in there as well. I find that SHeridan nursaries have great quality of sphagnum moss. Its a bit expensive...but its fantastic and clean.

You can try and see if you can use it as part of a mix for sarrs or VFT. Thats what I did with the old bag I had of mosser lee's crappy moss. If u have an outdoor bog, u could throw it in there. I personally wouldn't risk it with this stuff as a single primary consituent of my media.

ok, well I don't want to take a risk either so I will throw it in the backyard and see what it does, that wouldn't be wasting it right? It would be going back to the earth I guess.

looks like fens mosses to me.. i wouldn't use it, at least not for absorption property, or use it as a test in a spare pot/plant and let us know the result.

I already have it at the bottom of my VFT, it seems fine. I was just wondering about neps though...

I had that and it always seemed Ok but I've switched for NZ LFS. It's still good for the plug in the bottom of pots to keep the medium from falling out. You have to squish it under water to wet it.

Canadian Tire had some Chilean Sphagnum last time I went and it's pretty good. Prior to that they had some stuff from Wisconsin that was full of sticks and seeds and grass and loon poop.
Yours looks somewhere between, Devon. Not the worst I've seen, but not the best.

Yeah I used that one on my N. Rafflesiana and and a N. Mixta. It doesn't hold water at all since its a woodland moss and not a bog moss. The plants are ding fine but I put live LFS moss on top of that once I learned about it and proper LFS moss. It won't hurt your plants as far as I can tell but would only reccomend you use it in combination with other media. I guess it can be used to loosen up the other media.

oh, ok. Thankyou Rug. I might use it if I don't get proper LFS in time for my neps.
