Hey everyone,
I'm a noob when it comes to CPs, but they have enticed me for a little while now. Tried a couple times to grow the dionaea "red dragon", uncessfully. I am pretty sure that lighting was the problem. Getting to the point, I have been looking at compact fluorescent bulbs on the internet and was curious to know what websites you may have used to order them, or know of any local business in the Ottawa region where I could find some. Thanks

You could try Home Depot or Rona. Most hardware stores carry them. I use a 40 or 42 watt 6500k Daylight bulb. They give good results, but you could even get away with a 27 watt bulb also, in my opinion.

How big of an area are you wanting to cover? Each of those bulbs are about $12-$15 or more each from what I found here in Alberta. A 4' double T8 shop fixture will run you $20 and then $10 for two 6500k daylight bulbs and you'd be good to go. Just a thought... If your really wanting to get them on-line, I've ordered bulbs from www.elightbulbs.com before and had no problems. They are out of the states though. It would be cheaper to buy in store if you can.

Thank you for your prompt input, dvg how many of those 40-42 watt bulbs would i need for an area of about 3ft by 2ft. I was told i would need about 12000 lumen, is this correct or this figure for a larger area??
prmills, i like your tank setup. would you have more pictures of it you could send me. Are you using the T8s yourself in the tank, and do they produce a lot of heat??
Tx again for the help

If you have any where to grow Venus flytraps outside, then you should not buy lights, as a nice spot in direct sunlight is very beneficial. If you don't have anywhere to put them outside, then I guess artificial is the way to go, but once again i'd put them outside if you could.

I put my bulbs into chick incubator fixtures, which are just reflective domes designed to handle 250 watt heat lamps. You could use the clamp on aluminum reflective bench lights sold at hardware stores also, but I find the chick lights are bigger, deeper domes and reflect the light down more with less light being shot off to the sides.

tx dvg, i appreciate your help. I was originally looking into two 85w cfl, but I guess that would have just been overkill.
Ill be checking out home depot then to see what kind of fixtures I can get, something with a clamp would be ideal.
Off topic but just wondering, what was your first successful cp??
