I'm new to neps, so I was wondering if the home depot "orchid mix" would be useful, or should I go with one of d'amato's suggestions (equal parts perlite, vermiculite, sphagnum and "orchid bark"?

I wouldn't trust the Home Depot stuff, make your own.

I found the Shultz Orchid mix encouraged lots of little mites to go crazy in the pots. Not sure if they bothered the orchids, though.

Don't use anything with any additives or moisture control. Don't use coir unless you are prepared to really wash it and test it, it's got salt in it. Safest to mix your own ingredients. Almost any "premium" will have harmful additives. Be careful. Buy the cubes of peat anywhere.

CP's don't like fertilizer. They grow in nutrient-poor soil, which is why they eat bugs. Miracle Grow will not be good for them. Some people use 50/50 peat/perlite for everything and have good results.

Take a look under the 'Materials' section of this forum and you'll get an idea of what ingerdients you need to get / look for. Same with different media mixes (Nep section of the forum). They all depend on your watering habits / scheduel and where you grow them (ie: lighting, humidty, air flow, temps, etc...). There are basic mixes that it seems we all start out with until we feel comfortable enough to 'tweek' them to our growing style / ability.

I always suggest buying your peat in one of those compressed bales, I have yet to find a "bad" one of those. I keep a bale of that on hand aswell as a bag of perlite (i got a giant 70L bag from the local nursery, much cheeper in the long run hehe). I have yet to find a plant that wont grow in some form of a mix of those two. I also have a smale bale of the compressed long fibered sphagnum moss. for neps i like to chunk some up in the mix with the peat and perlite. It's just what i have found that works good for me in my situation. Hope that helps Sib
