Hi all Probably another stupid question from me again, but I was wondring iif I could use regular garden bark as a mulch in my outside bogs. I know some of you use orchid bark but what about redwood bark? Will it leach bad stuff? I just am trying to cicumvent the weeds early. I am so proud of my Sarrs this year, they came throuh the freaky weather very well. Now my VFT;s may be another story? Thanks guys for any and all advice!!

Hi Kelly...nice to see you again. Been a while. Glad to know that things are looking good. Personally I would suggest not to get the colored stuff as for the most part, it is artificially colored. (As far as I know). That might be a problem with CPs.

One grower on here uses a DENSE mat of pine needles to surround his plants- it looks slick, keeps the weeds down and reduces dehydration. Cedar bark might be okay I think...

oooh! You did send it?? I hope that bayer product turns out to be my solution if there are indeed any spider mites. Other products like orthene are not allowed to be shipped to canada....but that was a spray can. Apparently NO spray cans or compressed sprays are allowed.

I use the pine needles for a winter mulch to protect them from the weather. They seem kinda messy? The cedar mulch is the shreded kind right? Does it come in the mini bark form? Thanks

Hey, cedar does come in a thicker chunky form than the ultra shredded stuff. Check at a local nursery depending on the amount you need it can be bought by the bag or yard . I haven't heard of anybody having any bad side effects out side of a lack of nitrogen in the soil from it . I'm the one Mab's is talking about with the pine needles , reason i like using it is its light weight , and easy for smaller plants like dews, sarr's and flytraps to push threw. Plus as the needles degrade they help acidify the soil , and i like the down south pine savanna look:)

haha yes Jay IS "he who is not to be named" (I treat him as semi-mythological and so will pretty much never name him directly, helps maintain the mystery) Thanks for chiming in Jay, you were the one I was thinking would be the go-to on this topic

Jay or maybe *a*, wouldn't want to ruin the myth, do you have any pics of your pine needle mulch, I am having a hard time visualizing it. I think because I use them for my winter mulch in such quanity. How do your dews and VFT's come up through them or do you just mulch around them. (that was probably a really dumb question) I like the idea of the organic matter working for the CP's. I will check the nursery tomorrow and see what the have in the way of cedar mulch too Thanks so much
