I'll be creating my light hood in the next few weeks here so I have a question about the lights itself. I'll have an inside width of about 12 1/2 inches. Since T8's are 1 inch wide, could I squeeze 6 bulbs into this space with about 3/4 inch inbetween the bulbs and not worry about too many negative impacts?? Or would it be better to put 4 or 5 bulbs in with more space inbetween? I want as many bulbs as I can realistically fit but I don't want to waste either. My plants wll be anywhere from 7 to 12 inches away from them. Or is there some type of universal distance the bulbs have to be apart for optimal performance I've looked on the net but havn't found anything of use as of yet Thanks in advance!

I think about 1 foot from the lights to the leaves is good for fluorescents?

Well, I made the hood and due to the space only fit 4 with the reflector's. I didn't want to one set at a raised level, but it might be an option for those willing to try.

You're going to like your new light levels. Those are the fixtures I use on my plants. I have been using the daylight 6500k spectrum though. I was talking to my lighting guy and he told me that the 5000k will give the human eye the greatest perceived brightness, because it triggers the blue/grey rod recepters in the human eye to the greatest degree as well as lighting the cones in the eye up, also. So he says...I trust him, he's only been doing it for twenty five years. And good job on your hood. It pays to be a little handy and a whole lot creative when it comes to this hobby. I can see you put the time and effort into your project and it shows.

Thanks guys! I had to try and make it look good so I can "convince" my wife that we can get more and that they would actually look good For the bulbs, when these burn out, I'll get some of those 6500k ones to replace them. If I can get the plants growing better, why not! Thanks for the tip dvg!

How far do you guys have your plants away from the bulbs? I moved my VFT's, drosera and wanna-be seedlings to about 6 inches away. My sarr is about 8, ceph and mexi-ping about 14 or so. I do notice some colour coming, esp the ping, but always wonder if they shold be closer...

i have my setup at 6-10 inches from my cp`s, depending on the plant, my ping being groung hugging, and sarr being taller.

Right now, I have my seedlings, ping and d.ordensis (this one cause it's gonna die anyways) about 3 inches away. The top of my sarr's are about the same distance, my ceph is about 12 inches with 2 adult pitchers open on it, yeah!

My pings are around 6 inches away from my t8's and Sundews around 3 inches. I'm using 1 Daylight and 1 GE Aquarium and Plant F. Light. My VFTs are using a dedicated light [Exo-Terra 2.0] as they don't respond good enough under the t8s. I just noticed that Sundews has excellent response to blue LED lights [LUXEON].
