Ellen, I think you can post as much as you like, no matter what, even if it's "My vft is turning brown.. WHY???" if we had a "minimum experience" requirement for posting, no-one would ever learn anything, and for folks just starting out, it's alwasy good to be able to see that there is no such thing as "bad" questions, even us "intermediate" types (and no doubt even the more "expert" among us) can have some pretty odd questions- I think it's one of them "the more you know, the less you understand" situations... plus, I have only been growing CPs seriously for maybe 3 years, and there are LOTS of things I have yet to experience.. sometimes stuff just starts going wrong after being fine for a long time, then I do everything I know to do, and it STILL doesn't help, at which point I post a "HELP" thread, and usually someone else can answer the problem with a quick post... I don't feel like it was a "dumb" or "newbie" question, even if it's something I simply overlooked... I would not worry at ALL about asking questions (and also don't be too discouraged if no-one has any good answers, there's still LOTS of mysteries for all of us)

First and foremost, let me just say that there is no experience level required for this forum. Besides, a forum is a tool that more experienced growers can help less experienced growers! No matter who you are or what you know, your always gonna have to ask questions, I know for myself that the more I learn the more things I want to know about. We canadains are in an agrivating and unique position. The CP scene here is limited, there arn't many large nurseries, atleast not that I know of, and it's not easy to get plants in. So as such aside from people who have been in the hobby for a long time, there aren't very many that have plants definitive of their experience. We either can't get ahold of them, or they are so cost prohibitive that the mear thought of killing it puts some growers of until "later". The wonderful things about forums are that they are a faceless place for all people to be equal and share ideas. It can remove physical, geographical, and even language barriers. Sounds good dosen't it? Thanks, Sib

the old saying - "No question is a dumb question ...only that one that isn't asked, is a dumb question". I learn so much by watching others responses to questions asked...as I have done things my own way, and I am sure there are plenty of new and better methods.
I've been growing these plants for a long time. But i still have the same questions over and over - is there a better soil mix? Do Neps hate wet feet? and most important is that we all live in a nation that has a climate that is adverse to tropical plants...so how do we best provide artificial conditions to best house these marvels of nature?
I have a long list of trial and errors that I'd be happy to share with anyone who cares to listen. And here's one to think about - how do you force new basal shoots from a Nep when you don't want to (or can't) cut off it's only growing stem?

About getting another growth shoot, if the stem is long enough, you can try to bend/gently fold (?) the stem so that the top of it is about or under the soil level (in fact, NOT in the soil, just getting the stem downward), and maintain it tis way for a certain period of time. It could certainly break the apical dominance (?) and lead to shoots production.

Tom...you get the Gold star!
Yes... breaking the apical dominance by gravity. Hormone is believed to be distributed via gravity from the main growing tip, thus when you bring the tip down to the plant's root system, gravity works against it, and thus, basal shoot growth is encouraged. I experimented around with this with 12 similar plants - 6 with apical stems weighted down, and the others to serve as control. All six weighted Neps sprouted shoots.
My reasons for doing this was not so much to create new shoots for cuttings, but to discourage the less attractive upper pitchers. I think the Nep species were maxima and/or sanguinea that I had tried this experiment on.

Perhaps we could take these 2 posts and make anothers thread in the pitcher plants forums, it could be best used for others growers than in 'What do you think about the forum'..

Unfortunately it is a matter of reposting, as I can only delete specific posts within a topic... Sorry Sib

Yes... we had to make it CPs again. I'll start a new thread...maybe "tips, tricks and traps" on the Pitcher plant forum. It's just like it for us CP'ers - can't live with them and can't live without them

I was just goofin by the way, sometimes I can come off a bit strong without a really good amount of emoticons, but I am usually giggling when I post (even when I'm being serious, I like to laugh all the time) and yeah, tips tricks and traps sounds like a good idea- maybe we could have "sticky" threads, where Syble could add tips whenever they come up (make it an "admin only" thread so it doesn't get all crazy long)

i often miss many threads because of my lazyness to search, maybe a larger recent post list?? also maybe a "new growers primer thread" because some questions are more basic then others and dont need 2 be seen under the main Nep thread yaknow??
also a trial and error or experiments thread would be dope aswell somewere to see others past mistakes,
and i think organizing the forum more now before it becomes to large and unorganized would be benifical not only to new members but 2 all of us aswell becuase it avoids the constant change and switching of threads, also could be more eye appealing bringing in more members, i found the change of everyhitng kinda wonky but i hate change and cleanlyness is next 2 godlyness i hear lol
also i think in some places you still see the "GET YOUR VOTE IN" when its actually over but its understandable when this is a not profitable forum and all volunteer
and whats with the japs tryin 2 sell radiation above my post here huh?? lmao
