i think it is called fungicide. I was just wondering if anyone could reccomend some brands and places to buy this stuff. Ive had so many seedlings come up for various plant species and then they die of mold so I would like to keep this from happening because I'm spending alot of $ on cacti, palms, and CP's this spring, and would like to see them live past germination.

I use Benomyl which you can get at Home Depot. Colloidal sulfur works, too. Some people have recommended cinnamon or thymol. I find that if you lower the humidity and increase the ventilation the moment you get germination you almost eliminate the fungus.

I've also read that people soak some seeds in a 1:10 bleach/water solution for a couple of minutes, would this be okay for CP seeds?

no idea for the bleach water but alot of cp seeds are so tiney its not overly pratical! I use a touch of no damp, you can get it pretty much everywhere, works fine! Sib

The bleach idea probably won't hurt but the fungus that infects the seeds is inside the seed coat and the germinating medium and air.

i think the bleach solution can help in the case of a very contaminated testa, but not if it's already in the seeds as Lloyd said. I've seen bleach used in germination expriment to supress most of fungi problem in a petri plate (in the case the outer seed coat was carrying a lot of spores/got a lot of contamination from results of precedent experiments). this solution can also help in some case to improve germination in some case (ex: orchids) when the testa is mostly impermeable and the embryo can't easily be soaked up by water during the imbibition. The bleach attack the testa and partially degrade it, allowing a better imbibition, but a too long journey in the solution can eventually kill the embryo.

Ther is a product in the US called physan 20. It is used by a lot of orchid growers to keep the nastys in check. I havent found it yet in Canada but i have been using a product designed for hot tub algae controle. It is one of the same ingrediants thats in Physan. I have used it on everything and it seems to be dooing wonders. The only things that don't like it are sphagnum and dews. Im not sure how it would work on seeds or seedlings. For seed sterilization the diluted bleach is the way to go. Like has been said ther can be a fine line between just sterle and killing the seed. You can also sterilize the planting media too with heat. Stephen
