Has anyone tried Gel2root by Planters Pride to try and propagate cuttings. i emailed them and they said I could try it but they don't have any CP specific gels. Just wondering if anyone has tried it? I bought a pack and I'm gonna try some vft's and maybe some drosera leaves. i may try a nep as well just to see what may work as long as no one says that they had problems with it.

A lot of CP don't need rooting hormone to strike. Drosera are one of these in several cases, where you can only put some laf cutting in a sealed jar of distilled water and plantlets will appear on the lamina few weeks later.
The stuff should be handy for Nepenthes though, and perhaps VFT, althought I know you can have nice results without it for the VFT. As for the product, i don't know this brand, but the fact its a gel can help to have a better contact between the plant material and the gel, thus the rooting hormone. The more woody the plant you want to propagate is, the higher the concentration in hormones you should be looking for.

is that the stuff that looks like clear jello cups? if so I tried that, and found out afterwards that the ph is wrong, kills the plants nicely! Sib

probably not... I read the package very well in the store and sounded good, then when I got it home and opened it, it said right in the inside instructions not suitible for acid loving plants. Sib

Unfortunatly, we dont know how the others compounds in the gel would react... if the fact of lowering pH interact with the hormone molecule, you product will be no good anymore...

Yeah just spoke to a chemist and she said the same thing. Me being a bonehead bough a few packs of the stuff. She said I could try vinegar, soda water or peatmoss to lower the ph, but exactly what you said... it may and probably will affect the other parts of the medium and make it useless. I may just give it a try doing what she said. I have emailed the manufacturer to see what they recommend. They have told me in a previous email that they do not make a product that is suitable for acid loving plants. I'll let everyone know what I do and how it works out when I get the stones to try!

I was thinking of trying to make my own gel but it turns out the gels they use are destroyed by acid conditions so they wouldn't be much use for CP's.

Ah thats good to know! Guess I'll have to save this stuff for plants for the wife. O well I appreciate the feedback. I suppose I'll have to do cuttings the old fashion way. I was just hoping that this would give me the opportunity to actually see that it is rooting.

you can accomplish that rooting in distilled water Sib

I looked up soil-conditioning gels which as far as I could tell are all pretty similar to this one and acid pH does degrade them so they are not suitable for most CP's probably. If you want to keep track of rooting you could just root in distilled water as Sib mentioned. I use plain vermiculite sometimes; it's so loose that you can lift the cutting out and check for roots without hurting it.

Ah ok that makes sense. Thats what I'm most worried about, being new to this I'm not sure what to look for. I still haven't tried any cuttings yet but I know i will soon. Thnx

i bought some and and tried a few things in it. i tried a VFT cutting, a nep cutting and a christmas cactus cutting. the chritsmas cactus went to mush, tho stayed green the vft did actually start to grow, so ive since planted it in LFS, and the nep cutting was doing fine, until i was stupid and picked it out to see if anything was growing, and i didnt put it back in properly (into an air bubble) and it died. my thoughts?? seemed to work for VFT... tho im not sure if it was worth the $$... if u have some cuttings that u are willing to experiment with, it won't hurt.. try a couple of everything and see how it works! *EQL*
