Forget the aluminum test kit, it costs $122! You have to buy enough for 50 tests. I'm going to try distilled for a while and see if it's better than my dehumidifier water.

www.lamotte.com/pages/wawa/ind-kits/aluminum.htmlI finally ordered an aluminum test kit from the manufacturer in the US where it is cheaper. Now I will be able to check my dehumidifier water and roof rainwater to see if it's safe. If anybody wants a sample (minimum 10 cc) checked for aluminum levels you can send it to me. I will accept a few seeds or a small cutting as a voluntary fee.

The aluminum test kit came yesterday. I did some tests.
"0" means significantly less than 0.1 ppm.
Toronto Tap water: "0" (their web site gives Max 0.837 ppm, Min 0.025 ppm, Average 0.079 ppm)
My aquarium with U. gibba "0"
Price Chopper distilled water "0"
My dehumidifier water ~.45 ppm!!!! (with aluminum cooling coils)
Health Canada recommends 0.1/0.2 ppm for water supplies.
So I won't be using my dehumdifier water anymore. Price chopper for me from now on. I was surprised as the water is in contact with the coils for only a small amount of time. Imagine what rain (acid in Ontario!) would have after going over aluminum troughs, eavestroughs and downspouts. If anybody wants their water tested let me know.

It rained a bit yesterday and I collected some rainwater which falls on a slate roof with a few iron nails to aluminum gutters and downpipes and PVC pipe to the bucket. The aluminum level was "0" or less than 0.1 ppm. It was brownish because of the pine needles and other debris in the gutters. If anybody is interested I could check for Nitrites, nitrates, iron and pH.
