okay, this is probably a ridiculous question to ask, but i have no idea what live sphagnum actually looks like "in person". there is some moss growing with my plants that i've been assuming is some type of sphagnum, but i could be wrong. so i turn to you, my cp enthusiast friends, to help me figure out what it is. the weird part is, some of this moss seems to grow spontaneously from pots of peat that have nothing else planted in them. does sphagnum do that? anyway, here's the best picture i have, of the moss growing with some of my spathulatas. the plants don't look their best right now -- the one on the right flowered a while ago and is taking a while to recover, and i am not sure what's up with the plant on the left -- the middle growth point seems to have died off, and there is a bunch of new healthy growth coming out from underneath the side of the rosette. but there are also three or four dewy little babies popping up all around the mother plants, so i'm not tooo worried...

I'm not sure what type of moss that is... we do have a couple of people in the know about this stuff and I am sure they will tell you exactly what it is. Here is a pic of my Heliamphora minor x heterodoxa growing in what we would relate more to live sphagnum... Sorry about the colour... the greens in reality are much "greener" than that shown here... but the lighting makes it look kind of funny when photographed. I'll have to see what photoshop will do for it (I still have a lot to learn about digital photography). >>> Rick <<<

Yep, that's the moss alright Rick. It IS much more green in "real life"
That's moss you have, Daniello, is typical "WTF" moss.
Sphagnum could manifest from peat, but it's not likely, lots of other mosses will pop up tho- I've had some WEIRD stuff in my pots sometimes
Tom can tell you roughly what it is, when he comes back, he's out in the bogs I do believe, right now

well good then. at least i know that what i have is decidedly NOT sphagnum. will the "wtf moss" hurt my plants and should i rip it out/get rid of it, or does it matter?

lol! Daniello.... by "WTF" mabs means "What the **** kind of moss is this?" "Where did it come from ?" kind of feeling which u get with mosses like this. lol! Don't worry...we all have this experience. However, depending on how much you like mosses, it can be a pain or a wish come true (me. ). lol! here is an example of the same moss in my pots.

I have that stuff everywhere even in my non-cp's when I keep a pot on the moist side.

varun -- i'm familiar with the "terminology", but thanks for the explanation ;D you are quite the moss collector! you're right, it's kind of pretty, and if it is not hurting the plants i see no reason why to rip it out. everyone: i know this is a common question, and i have read some previous threads about it, but is it possible to grow live sphagnum from rehydrated dry stuff? i took a handful of dead stuff, re-wet it and stuck it in a bag, but i'm doubtlful about whether that will actually produce live moss. has anyone actually had success doing that? when i first started growing cps, i got all excited when my dead sphag started turning green, until i realized it was just algae covering it and not the sphagnum actually coming alive!

Good to know that there are others that have had this spontaneous moss pop up in their pots! I figured it only happens with pure water, but has anyone had it happen to peat that had been watered with tap water? I love moss! ;D
I have had dried sphagnum sprout, but it is rare, and you would need a lot of it to get anything substantial. Most of the time the spores are dead, but occasionally some come through. Give it a try and see. I tried the bag method, but it got all mouldy - if I try again, I'd put it in a shallow pot, and sit it in water with my other CPs, and let the water wick up to keep it moist.

Acutally I had a lot of dead sphag throw up live stuff. But it took a looong time. Atleast like 5 months or so.

I have had the "dead" dried New Zealand LFS start growing from dormant spores that were present in the product. I have a couple of tanks of the stuff growing well for me right now.
