I met up with an old friend today ... another old CP guy! David Caughlan used to build fantastic vivariums and once had a successful company building tropical and desert displays for doctors' and dentists' offices, and for film sets like the old "X-files" show. He now helps with the displays and stuff at the Vancouver Public Aquarium - including the tropical frogs, kids' education area and is now helping plan the displays for the new wing (under construction). It's been over 10 or more years since I last touched base with him, but I found him, and he kindly invited me to visit the backrooms of the Aquarium. They are planning a nice CP display and permitted me to shoot a bunch of photos. Here are some pics I shot this morning: The poison dart breeding area (terrariums were being moved to allow temp access for the new wing expansion). The shadow on the left is my young one, who is kind of camera shy: Here are some pics of some of the frogs in the terrariums: Here's a pic of my friend, David C., in his office : The collection of CPs earmarked for a public display behind the door that read: David's Nepenthes x trichocarpa (gracilis x ampullaria): His old VFT: And some neat jellyfish, to be publicly presented next year in a new exhibit at the Aquarium: And of course, the snakes and pirahnas my young one wanted to see: David's first display made for the Aquarium (over 25 years ago): And to finish off, the educational CP terrarium built by him for school kids at the Aquarium: I'd like to thank David Caughlan and the Vancouver Public Aquarium for permitting me to shoot these photos for public viewing. David

WOW...How did he make the last one? Can you please ask him to give some tips? I want to use like a piece of wood trunk too like that...But I guess I am waiting till my VFT;s all settle.
Can you also ask him what is the light he is using for the last terrarium?

Hi Vraev-
Sorry I keep missing these posts...so I didn't see your earlier question. Seems that unless I check the entire thread, I miss new items... this is a great board, but it only shows the 10 most recent items or worst, if I miss the bold item, I miss the rest of stuff if I visit a day later.
Anyways, complaining aside, the light on the last terrarium is a neat looking CFL. looks like a bunch of small tubes placed on a face of a clock. Apparently, it gives off the equivalent of a 800 watt light, at only 50 watts. Great for keeping the heat and electricity bill down.

FT: on a side note, the best way to keep up on posts is to look for the blue circles next to the board names on the main page, blue circle means a new post/reply in the board, then when you go to the board to view topics, there will be a blue new by the one which are new since the last time you've visited. If you click on the actual new bit, it will jump you directly to the spot in the thread that you finished off at last time. Hope this helps some. Thanks, Sib

thanx for the reply flytrap. Do u know the model of those light bulbs i.e., the CFL;s?? I might look them up and see if I can grab a couple for my terrarium. It may not be for now...but atleast for next summer's revamp.
BTW...does anyone know how to get tiny driftwood? The ones in aquarium stores are expensive....

If you live near a river or water plan, you can try to find some along the shores; that's where we found a lot of the ones we use. Take care to give them several bath of a few hours in clean water, especially if they were near really polluted water, or water containing salt (this is especially true if you wish to grow plant mounted).

well....lol! there is the problem...I am not in such an area...yet....the aquarium store is still the "reliable" source considering it would be washed properly to be suitable for aquatic life. I am actually planning a big project for CP's in a terrarium this coming summer. A full blown system with waterfalls cascading on wood.....lower level mist....etc

Sounds like a good way to keep Darlingtonia cool. I was thinking of a way to have flowing water if my stratifying darlingtonia seeds germinate next spring.
