Nepenthes were named by Linnaeus, one of the fathers of modern Botany, after the intoxicating elixir of Homeric myth ("Nepenthe, heart's ease, dissolving anger, magic to make us all forget our pains"). For me, Nepenthes brings me great joy and happiness... ah, many countless hours wasted with me ...lost in my world of tropical pitcher plants... away from all the noise and sorrow of the outside world. I write this today, because like many of you, I've always been overjoyed at seeing a small offshoot arising from a nep plant. It's a double blessing because you get another round of lower pitchers (usually prettier than the uppers), but more important, you know that you have a potential cutting in hand. However, most of my Neps I have acquired over the years came from purchases or trades with other people...so they were mostly already grown plants by the time I got them. But today... I saw one of my own sprouting a shoot! I grew a bunch of Nep xhookerianas years ago from seed - lost a lot due to negligence, and traded away some others. So with the remaining few that I have, they've been popping up nice pitchers - lowers and uppers for a number of years. So today, I saw the very first basal shoot off of one of my larger xhookerianas! What a nice surprise after laying in bed for a week nursing a cold. I plan to take some photos of my little sprout and share it with all of you like a proud daddy. Yup... Nepenthes are the elixir of Joy David

It's funny that you wrote this because my nep. Spectabilis that I got from Macrovulgaris on ebay made me an offshoot about a week ago! And its true that its fun to see that your plant is doing good... Cya

I find that the mature neps that are hanging lower than the point where they grow out of the medium, sprout a new offshoot sooner. If you want offshoots let them hang down. Stephen

When I visited Al Bickell's greenhouse he showed me how the neps would sprout offshoots when the main shoot was lower than the pot.

After reading leilani's expose on Nepenthes' registration the post above is rather refreshing.
