I just think this might be fun- certain folks here have an odd enough sense of humour for this, I think-
As you all know, most of our CPs have NO common names, which means tellin non-CP folks about it, we tend to sound like some kind of snooty robots (I know I do- people like the flowers on U.sandersonii, but when I say the NAME of the thing, folks just give me odd looks, whereas if you say "Angry Bunnies", they are more engaged)
So, I propose that we could come up with personal "common names" for stuff for fun... and if you want to make up a common name for something that already HAS one, that's okay too.
Even if you just want to make up a silly name for a particular specimen that you have, go for it, I just think we could have a bit of silly fun with this idea...
My first one will be (wait for it) U.subulata!!! I think it should be referred to as "The Creeping DAMN"

Mabudon... how about "Creeping Death" as in Metallica (in the studio recording - hopefully TOURING!!!)
My wife always says that the pitchers of many Nepenthes species, when they're about to open, look very phallic. That leaves the door open to a few possibilities, I'm sure.
If anyone wants to run with that one, please feel free to do so.
Maybe something will hit me later today... right now, I'm at work and need to catch up on my sleep.. zzzzzzz

How about (Utricularia) subul-mwa-ha-ha-ha (substitute your best galactic arch villain evil laugh here)? Genlisea: "Wilted Lettuce", U. gibba: "Floater", etc. Not too catchy, I'm afraid.

Hey Rick... "creeping death" has already been assigned to a VFT cultivar. And I understand that it's name has assisted in large quantities of sales of this clone! As for common name, I'd like to suggest "stomachs of death" for the tubby bicalcaratas I have in my greenhouse! David - Mabudon... how about "Creeping Death" as in Metallica (in the studio recording - hopefully TOURING!!!)

Hi David,
Where can I get THAT clone?
All of my stuff from you is coming along nicely now... My bicalc just put out a new pitcher that is 50% larger than the last one.
I'd call this plant "BUG BUCKET".

I think the names like "Flypaper plant" , "monkeycup" , "beartrap plant" are good as well....but they are already known and used in literature...so nothing new here.

I hate the common name 'monkeycup' for Nepenthes...Its really too corny. The Latin names are much prettier and evocative - that is, once you know what they mean!

Jay has a big gulp S.leucophylla, might be a good name choice- And even tho I said common name- I thought of a Latin name- it can only be applied to any S.flava plants when the pitchers flop over from eating too much, at which point the plant becomes a "Gladiate'em" Sorry about that
