ooh man! U seriously are a funkytech ... I wouldn't dare even dream to bring a blow torch near my plants. How did u burn them off? Low flame....just burn the top of the peat layer??
bTW..what are those temperate drosera that similarly go into dormancy with the VFT??
but still a stellar setup...keep updating this thread ot show us the progress of your plants ....I would love to see the changes as ur terrarium comes to life.
...on a site note:
I seriously need some help....later this summer in august, I will be going to the US for atleast 5 days or so. I really need to setup a automated watering setup. Is there a easy and relatively inexpensive way (under 50$ ) to water a closed terrarium and a outside nepenthes pot?? I know there is this haber rain system which mists for like a few intervals a day..but its expensive.
thanks,
vraev

I'd try and go with someone you can trust to water them. Use trays, maybe lower the light levels. Soak everything before you go. You should be Ok for 5 days.

hmm.....I don't think my parents will allow a friend of mine to come over when we are not available. It is not a matter of trust...its a matter of concern "IF the door has been locked properly after he leaves" Soaking works for 2-3 days....but I am not entirely sure if its just 5 days or 6 so....I rather have the peace of mind thinking that I have a system that can take care of them when I am away. Lighting is done...but this is the only other concern. Any mechanical device available that can like water twice or thrice in a day for like 15 sec or so?? thanks, vraev

If you soak them and use deeper trays, you should be fine for at least a week or so. I'm sure that many would see flooding and drier periods in their natural environment anyway.

Funkytechnician, that is some weird stuff- smoke on the "battlefield", destruction by fire in an aquarium in your living room... "controlled burn" indeed Looking real good tho, can't wait til it all fills out, thanks for posting these!!

hay thanks for the comments guys ;D I actually found it easier to burn off the old leaves then to try to cut all of them, especially the sundews, I would end up pulling the hibernocule out of the ground with the snippers, once I started the fire, it spread across the surface of the ground and consumed the surface debris, also I was plesently surprised to see that the ground is almost completely covered with drosera seedlings of some kind, there too small to see in the pictures, but in another month, i'll post some shots and you''ll see the ground is litterly peppered with them. Oh ya and the sundew you can see there are a temperate mix of filiformis, rotundifolia, intermedia, anglica, and all their hibrids they formed over the years.....I enjoy how the first leaves are always soooooo super green, and then after they have put out some of there first sprouts, they begin to show off there "happy plant" colours, especially now that I hooked back up there CO2 generator that feeds into the water pump pick up, then the pumps impeller diffuses the C02 into the water supply, which then gets reliesed into the terrarium air

thanks buddy! I am not that "into electronics" (except computers) so can you please see this and say if this is feasable? www.zoomed.com/html/habbamist.phpit is like 70$ but do you think its cheaper than your system? and easier?

well I'll let you decide for your self, the home made system is pretty simple, all you really need to buy is a water pump for a coffee table water fountain, they sell those at pets unlimited for around 20 or 30 dollars, depending on what size you want, the bigger the pump you get, the further the pump and reservoir can sit away from the plants, and a digital timer (walmart) I think there around 12 dollars? I can't remember that one . those are the major purchases, and then you just need rubber tubing (home depot) 60 cents a foot and a large plastic container like a rubber maid or something with a lid, (thats your water reservoir so however long you want to go between re-fill intervals, that's how big of a container to get) also remember that your pump/reservoir can't sit too far below what your watering because the pump is literally "lifting" that column of water to reach the plants and drastically reduces the output of the pump, so try to keep the pump/reservoir roughly sitting at the same height as your plants, give or take, depending on the size pump you get

hmm....that sounds actually more meaning ful and probably will be fun to try as well. I would love to see if you can show me some pictures of yours as you said and I guess I can try doing that. that is the intervals that you turn on the pump for?
