well I guess the hard part is over, the seed has germinated ;D At anyrate, these are the first Utrics I've grown from seed, actually these are the first ones that look to be thriving, my angry bunnies never took when I got them and the dichotoma is stubbornly hanging on heres hoping it'll pull through! At anyrate, I'm thinking about growing them individually in plugs until I decide what to do with them, what do you guys think? Sib

I'd figure just wait til the pot fills out and then divide them- that's what I'd do, as once the "dirt" is a mess of Utric parts it'll be easy to make divisions, at this stage you'd likely run more of a risk of setting them back if you disturb them
And I'm gonna send out some angry bunnies soon, you're STILL on that list so hang in there!!

LOL, I look forward to them! I've always wanted that utric, but like everything else I end up with a halfdozen other species or more before I get the one I was after! I thought that maybe there would be a use to having seperate clones... I have 2 different forms of calycifida, one from gran saban and the other white. I also have laterfolia (?) growing...that one I have no notion of seperating, it can carpet its little heart out! Now I might have myself confused, but I thought that calycifida was a farily "leafy" species, and as such would make a decent terrarium plant, which is another reason I thought it might make good use of being in preformed plugs? I also thought that if I moved them early enough, I wouldn't desturb them at all because I could take enough soil with them that their roots wouldn't be disturbed? What do you think? Sib

I don't have experience with the species (tho I DID ID it just from the pic, which is something) Tommy would be the one to ask on that- I would think that seedling Utrics would have a LOT of real tiny bits that could be easily damaged, tho, so beware - wait til Tom chimes in before doing anything too drastic

I find that any piece of the underground part of any reasonable size will make a new plant. Calicyfida has prominent stolons so I use any piece with a stolon and attached "root" to propagate. The other ones with fragile stolons such as laterifolia or tricolor, I ignore the stolons and just bury any smidgen of "root' "glop just under the medium. Invariably a month or so later there's stolons all over the pot. Humboltdii sends these aerial "stems" out and I just bury them just under some submerged sphagnum.
By the way, whenever any of my utrics are looking poorly, I repot them in new medium and invariably within a month they look great.

Whats the secret into germinating Utrics? I guess the seed freshness plays a big role. I have tried to germinate several species without any luck.

I was testing a small batch of seed, they are fairly fress I guess. I keep mine on my stand in a cake dome dish, keeps the humidity really high and keeps it a little warmer. Thanks, Sib
