Caviar=Surgeons Eggs?? And does caviar emptor mean "let them buy fish eggs"?? Nice laugh for a sunday morning, thanks guys Varun- I know most folks who use silica "sand" use really coarse stuff, I do- the stuff you describe is not too good in some ways, as it is so fine and silt-like that it really compacts and actually makes more problems than it solves in some cases, as you imagined would be the case

lol! glad that my "vocabulary" was amusing . yeah lol! caviar is a kind of fish or fish eggs aaahh....I knew it. Good thing I didn't buy that silica sand from the aquarium store and stuck with perlite. So where would I get the "good" silica sand carl? I really think it looks better than perlite ... and I am thinking it would be a nice medium to grow some moss on

I bought silica sand from an aquarium store. It is a little bit finer than Home Depot sandbox sand. It also had more salts in it and took a few washings to get it down to distilled level in the wash water.

i have those two VFTs growing in 1 inch of soil, it was more when i potted but it compacted also today i feed one of the older traps on my red dragon which grew when submerged and the bug got out cause it was very slow, then with the same bug i fed a new one which just grew when not submerged and it was dramatically faster just a though craft sand from micheals craft store worked well it seems, and i never washed it or nothin isent silica sand deadly for the health?

Dude,
Make sure that you don't feed your flytraps too much without letting it aclaimatise a lot..becos you will loose traps. Let it grow for a while...and actually open the door on your enclousure and let bugs come in themselves. That is better than trying to feed every trap. You will get faster growth...but that growth will be weak. Its always best to give the flytraps an occassional meal or maybe let it do its own thing rahter than force feeding it.

Silica (very fine) dust is very toxic to the lungs. I think the stuff from aquarium stores is fairly dust free although I always wash my sand in dehumidifier water (distilled).

well those two plants are in the same pot and it seems that the B52 catches many bugs by its self, the prob is trying to get the bugs to stop going in and getting in the traps, well the red dragon hadent successfully caught anything since i got it, only anys which would bit it and casue weird holes proboly chewing through?? ruining the traps
and there was a fat juicy bug just askin for it yaknow lol its seems that bugs go to the same trap on my plants??? is this common on VFTs??
bugs find ways to get in exspecially wasps its not totally airtight

well...it can make sense as generally flies are attracted to carcasses...but i don't know if insect carcasses count ... but attracting spiders is known. However, hey, if you are seeing holes in the traps...that means YES! something is chewing through them when caught. There is nothing much to do though..but just hope that the VFT catches another bug later in another trap. Thats what would happen in the wild as well.

personally i have 70/30 peat/perlite, and i have a little bit of a different watering technique... i grow mine in a mini greenhouse, and i have a tupperware container with rain water, and an old dishtowel spread out on a placemat (with raised edges), with a corner of the towel in the bucket. i find that the towel stays soaked, and the pots can get water without being submerged. I find it helps the humidity stay up, and i dont have bugs drowning in the water (instead they crawl into the VFTs... yummmm!) hope this is clear enough... ill take a pic when its not raining... *EQL*

they are doing quite well actually.. i will post pics when it stops raining, but the 2 sundews are recovering nicely from the trip, the vft is alive, its traps are a bit smaller then the ones it had originally, but i think it's doing fine. i was right with the ping.. something happened to the roots, however, i planted it anyway, and now new pings are growing from the old one... like if it was a cutting! lol so yes.. they are doing quite well. thanks! *EQL*

yeah! lol! basically give that ping the same conditions as a VFT and u will never run out of ping primuliflora. Lol! it multiplies like crazy. Glad that they are doing good. Dont worry about the VFTl...as long as its growing..it means its ok. have fun!
