If you look at the first pic, you will see that he had a TON of dormant plants in there to begin with. The growth would be typical of what you'd expect on a per plant basis.
Brings back memories, though...
I once had a pot of typicals like that under my lights. From the normal vantage point they didn't look very much like anything special, as they were somewhat sparse. I always attributed it to dormancy or something like that.
It turned out that my young (at the time) daughter was facinated with them and would contantly pick the young growth off and bring it to me. I never clued in just how often she did that until I pulled the tupperware container in which they were growing (about 12 x 16 inches) and found that the ones in the back were so thick you couldn't see the soil.
I arranged a crown of thorns cactus to grow in front of the VFT and the problem was resolved after a couple of painful pokes in the fingers.

I had a very simular situation with dentes 2 years ago? when I was growing in big planters mostly sarracenia and I had an empty spot so I put 3 big dentes there. they spent a happy year in my garden, pigging out, then the folowing spring at the end of dormancy I devided them and had well over 50! most were very reasonable sized plants also, and there were the 3 large main crowns to put back, I sold/traded/gave away more then half because it was way to much for my little planters.
