I have boughten vft's from Sobeys, Rona, Home Depot, Big Als and other similar places. When i didnt know what i was doing i definitely killed a lot of them, but since I learned how to properly care for them I haven't lost one. Most stores sure dont know (or care) how to take care of them, but if you can grab one early enough while they are still healthy there shouldn't be any problems provided you give them the proper care once they are home. I have had success bringing back almost dead ones too, and yup sometimes they are a great deal.

Canadian Trash or places like wal-mart here will no carry them now But order 1 if you want it and they usually want a down payment so they are not stuck with it I still go with buying from Nurseries that was some one does not feed me a line to move it out of their poor care. I went to a home depot here and went to the garden center looking for Perlite and asked the employee if she worked their in the garden center she said sure do so I asked where the Perlite was she said whats that? leaving I ran into the manager and said employees working in the garden center should be comptent..she knew nothing !! and I walked out with no Perlite and I was prepared to buy horticultural sand, another bale of peat and more pots but because of her ignorance I did not get anything,,I just left.
