I'm hoping to move my plants outdoors soon and I feel a need to protect them somehow. I have 2 Sarrs that have been outdoors and were uprooted twice before I installed this protective device. As you can see there is no room for expansion.

I started building an outdoor tray system starting with this "under bed" storage box. Next I built a base to support it. Then a top to make it look nicer. The next step is to assemble a frame to hold bird netting, I found these PVC fittings at Lee Valley.

Make sure bugs can get through the netting.

Looking Good! Cant wait to see the end product I think that netting might be too fine, but if you leave the sides somewhat open I guess that would be "fine"

Make sure bugs can get through the netting. It's bird netting, I haven't measured the openings but they are at least a cm.

Looks like you have a good start there. I've seen people use chicken wire to keep critters out before with a similar setup.

Nice! The wooden box makes it look way more attractive than the plastic tubs I've got all over the place. Can't wait to see it all set up with plants

Thanks everyone for the encouragement. I've been busy building a new deck but finally found time to finish this and post a picture. I think the 3/4" PVC may be a bit overkill, if I do another I'll use 1/2". I fastened the frame to the wood top so I can lift it off to access the tray for cleaning etc, but will discourage a critter from trying to pull it apart.

I am using that same plastic container outside. I really like the wooden frame you have made for it. It looks great.
