Jay and I talked about it when we met up- I can't recall what he said exactly , but basically he told me that a few species were "sweet" That was pretty much all I needed to hear, so I went around tasting some 'dew and that drool on Nepenthes, and I have to say it IS sweet- I'm gonna try to taste that nectar that forms on the ala of Sarracenias, but I have yet to see any I was wondering if anyone else has ever wondered about or actually gone so far as to taste any species?? I can't wait til my Pings get big enough to sample, and I am planning on tasting some Drosera leaves (I won't swallow them as I'm under the impression that some species might be bad for ya, and if I'm not sure then I don't wanna be the "pioneer" who found some new biotoxin) So yeah, I know it's weird but I had to post this, I am sure I am not alone, Jay proved that and now I figured I would put it out here and get some feedback (and if Tommy doesn't have ANYTHING to add to this, I'll be shocked ) PS I don't think I'll ever taste any Utrics, the terrestrial ones are too covered in dirt and I don't know where any aquatic ones are

I have tasted Nepenthes nectar, obviously tasted very sweet! Havent tried other genus though... I would also put 20$ that Tommy has already tasted portions of his collection! Also, I have read that drosera rotundifolia has some medicinal applications.

Aren't pings used to curdle milk and tenderize meat in some cultures? Could make a nice ping marinade for the BBQ but you would need a lot, and Mabudon, you've been looking for some for so long why eat them now?

Hey it's not because my lab work made me a little tubby since 2 years that I HAD to taste my plants at least once! Neither my student budget for my grocery made me try rice, bean and sundew sauce... ! Sorry to disapoint you Martin, but I haven't yet... Althought I plan to cook a Thai meal in Nepenthes pitchers once, for a special supper, someday... And that I plan to find a nice recipe for making cheese with Pinguicula as the curdling agent... As for utilisation in medicine, sundews contains few compounds which are antispasmodic and rubefiant (ie calm your caugh and irritate the skin), so i dont think you would die to try a leaf or 2 mabudon. If i remember well, Sarracenia are known to be diuretic... Pinguicula had been used to american ameridians womens to cure 'sores to their breast after lactation' (sorry, can't find better technical words). Plumbagin (or plumbagol? hmm have to check back my papers again!) found in a few sundews species have been found to prevent cavities. Yet to discover a recipe for sundew pudding though...

LMAO Tommy, you are SO european I KNEW you had plans to make pinguicula cheese- and it would be rennet-free so vegetarian (tho not vegan)n friendly- might be something to look into since a lot of folks I know like to avoid rennet, myself included- you must let us know when the experiment succeeds and we'll come visit for sure- hopefully I will have made some kind of dish too- if I can figure out a recipe for D.capensis we'll be all set Brian- Oh no worries, my P.moranensis should be big enough to take a bite outta in a month or two don't gotta eat the whole plant... and it's not like I was gonna eat my Cephs- gotta wait a year or two to have enough to spare, and I would prolly rather make cuttings than snacks at that point I think I've changed my mind on Utrics too, I can snip off a piece of the aboveground bits of U.longifolia and give them a taste, I will report any findings in this very thread so stay tuned.. Oh and insectivore- did they taste good?? you didn't say Oh and sorry about that 20$ Martin

If I remember well, Peter d'Amato told in his book that his tongue felt numb when he tastes the Nepenthes nectar/fluid... Anyone confirmed this?

I tasted a bit of the "drool" off of the lip of my N.ventricosa the other day- it was REALLY sweet, almost "slushy" or something, and it DID indeed have a glycerine-like quality- not exactly "numbing" but it did feel kind of weird
And I wanted to hurry and post this yesterday but was avoiding too much online time due to storms... I chopped off a bunch of D.capensis flower stalks, and they were so thick and numerous that I just HAD to eat some of them- they didn't tase too bad at all, actually, nice and green and just a bit sweet, not at all bitter like I totally expected them to be- I may make a salad or something with them as I'm going to have a LOT of them in the next months

I've noticed my S. leukophylla is always sticky on the outside with a very sweet nectar. I've never tasted the nepenthe pitcher liquid as I usually put bugs in it. I've tried sundew "dew" and it seems tasteless. U. calcifyda flowers are fairly bitter but not worse than arugula. Most of the green bits of sundews and utrics are somewhat bitter to my taste. I've noticed that my mature Heliamphora pitchers really smell like honey but I haven't tasted them. Maybe I'll be inspired to try now.

To add to what Martin mentioned about medicinal properties. My Fiancée is studying to be a Naturopathic Doctor (3 years down one to go) last time I was sick she brought me a cough syrup with one of the ingredients being Drosera Rotundifolia. It was mixed with Honey and lemon... YUM! ;D

Yep, guilty as charged, Varun. I can hardly wait to taste the pitchers on my N.ampullaria, onmce it makes some, the way they look makes it seem like they will be extra tasty... I suppose I should taste my Byblis, too, since it is a different genus it should taste unique, maybe I'll do that today
