Hey guys! I've been pretty inactive on the forum recently due to camp for a month, and finishing school with exams, so I'm excited to be back around! There's been talk with my parents over the last few months about maybe moving from Edmonton to Calgary, a few hours to the south! If so, I may be allowed to build a greenhouse with my dad's help in our new backyard. I was wondering if you guys could get me in on how you guys built your greenhouses if you have them, and how to deal with proper heating and cooling (proper for intermediate to highland growing). I know that Brad Taylor here has a beautiful greenhouse, along with some others so please, fill me in on what to use and show pictures if you have them!

Sounds like a great opportunity. I can't offer much advise as I don't have one, and never built one - but I look forward to pictures of the process!

For cooling a greenhouse the two main options are either AC or swamp coolers

I was thinking the same thing, I used to live in Alberta for 2 years. Might be better to make a grow area inside in the basement and an area in a sunny yard for temperate stuff.

Edward,
A few members at the OSPF and the AOS have very successful greenhouses and I'm sure you can convince some of them to show you around. They're mostly retired and love to show their collections and talk about plants. I can give you some names to help you get started. It's not as bad as you might expect but you cannot escape the heavy initial costs.
Regards

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to say that it's gonna happen, just that it's a possible idea in the future that I'm very excited for. Thanks morphman, I'll talk hopefully pm you to talk about it. Thanks for the input everyone!

Funny thing is that there seems to be more plant people in Edmonton than in Calgary. Anyhow, I sent you a link that might be of some use? If we compare the attendance at Edmonton Orchid Show with the Calgary (Foothills) one then I would say that there are definitely a lot more plant people in Edmonton.

I never got to go to the orchid show in Edmonton this year, but I loved the Calgary one! Got to talk with you too and hang out with the OSPF for a bit so it was awesome. Plus plants!!

Yes it was great seeing you there and I'm glad you liked it. Imagine the Calgary show on steroids Make sure you don't miss it next year because it's one of the best in the country and if things go well we might even be hosting the World Orchid Congress in Edmonton but that won't be for a few more years.
