A couple of observations from an orchid grower w twenty years experience: - plant media is old and needs to be replaced. - repot plant w orchid mix and fill pot until media is almost flush with lowest leaf. - Black crowns usually denote rot caused by excessive water sitting between leaves. This will kill plants if not stopped immediately. - water the media but do not let water get in the crown of the plant Phals are low light plants so make sure it is grown in a window that does not expose plant to direct sun.- Feed lightly at 1/4 recommended dose every other week. On alternate weeks water with rain water or plain tap water. If you have any other questions pm me. Good luck! Duncan Highlighted in red is what I told my dad! Instead he chases after the sun with orchid in hand But to be fair, I was lead to believe it can handle half sun because it was doing great over the past few months until ~3 weeks ago two leaves started dying off for no reason. I better tell my friend to move hers to a shady spot...

Looking forward to hearing how it does!! Phals are great to learn with, they are not as fussy as others orchids. What type does your friend have? It looks like it could use a repot. Put in a pot just large enough to hold it roots snugly. I like the clear plastic orchid pots, and a orchid bark mix medium. I have no idea. I don't remember the label saying anything special. I'll see if my friend took a picture of its flowers though. It's white-pinkish small flowers but bundled like a flower bouquet almost.

Good advice about the lighting levels. Phals in general like bright but indirect light. They can handle morning sun but protect them from the strong afternoon sun. Some species do like more light than others however. I have three species growing in front of my large southern windows!

Yep, I did, almost cut everything off before repot.

Hopefully it will settle in and grow some more roots for you now! Just try to keep it from wobbling around so that any new root tips don't get damaged. Keep us posted on any progress!

Update: Oh sigh, this plant is unfortunate enough to have to go through two more brutal "repots" due to unpredictable human behavior and it got mold This is what it looks like now: leaves are a bit shriveled but seems to stay that way without getting much worse (yet). Flower stalk keeps growing though.

Awwww...I would just cut that spike off, the plant doesn't have enough energy to bloom, it needs to direct its limited resources into growing new roots.

It will still grow roots?! That's good to know. Is there anyway to propagate using the stalk?
