Hi, I live in Vancouver, B,C. I'm looking for pure silica sand for potting but I find it extremely hard to get silica sand, specifically certain sizes like 1.5- 2mm size. I was told it's a health hazard. I tried Lordco but I think it's too fine and it's also coloured(tan). Can somebody lead me to the pile of silica sand pls.
Cheers

You don't want to breathe the dust. Wash it thoroughly when you do get it. It's always available, you just have to look.
Search the forum for suggestions.

...go to a pool supply place, not a building supply place. They have it, it's used as a filter.

Picked up sand at CT yesterday and repotted with perlite and spagnum moss. It's #20 grain and all the same size. It's like beach sand size. I'll post some pics next few days as I'm super busy at work. Oh I got a Death dome VFT from big box store bouts month ago. Put it under my DIY led panel with total of 60 watts with 11-3 watt red and 9-3 watt blue. Now my VFT has become 3 plants! Will post pics soon.

Most of us stopped using such fine sand, it tends to bind up the soil.

My soil mix is 2 parts peat moss, 1 part perlite and 1 part sand. Will this mix still bind up the soil? I wanted bigger size sand grains around 1-2 mm but all they have is pool sand at #20.

It will be OK for a few months at least.

I have just had to repot a bunch of plants I potted with a 50/50 peat sand mix. The sand I used was too fine and the soil compacted which caused the plants health to go downhill. Since repotting them in peat/ perlite they have bounced back.

Here's the size grain sand I used. Then in a week I think I have a flower stalk growing out! I hope I get seeds!

I went and visited my parents in Vernon, B.C. While there I looked up "Sand Blasting" in the yellow pages and obtained this 100 lb page of 16 grit sand for $18. The size of each grain of sand does very considerably. This is only the second bag of 16 grit sand I have bought. The first bag was from Lordco and they don't carry it any more. The grain size seemed more consistent in that first bag.

I went by my local pool supply place this weekend and picked up their standard pool filter silica sand and the grains were all about what I have seen in my received plants from the experienced growers on here - certainly not too fine, maybe 1mm size bits - don't have time to do the rigaramole of posting the pic of it right yet... Looks promising and for 50lbs it was 13 bucks.

Hey thanks for the tips all. Yeah that #16 looks good. Different shapes and sizes. I think I got the wrong sand. It looks too fine but I also added perlite.Unfortunately, I repotted all my plants a month ago. I think I should wait for spring and get the larger grain sand.
