I'm getting some D. natalensis seeds.
Is a standard CP mix 2:1 Perlite:peat ok for seeds? I also have some sphagnum moss but I don't know if it'll help or hurt.
Container wise, how important is it to have something with drainage holes in the seed-seedling phase? I was planning to just spread the media out in a large, flat tupperware container and leave it at that. Then transplant into proper pots when they get big enough. But I'm not sure if not having drainage holes would be a problem. I can alternatively get a slightly smaller container to fit inside the larger one and make some holes in the bottom if that's necessary.
Thanks!

Live LFS might grow faster than the seedlings hence it's not ideal. The seeds will germinate on pretty much anything wet, personally I prefer pure peat top dressing so that the perlite doesn't get in the way. Germinate time is from 2 weeks to 4 weeks, it depends; some germinate really fast while some take their time. I'd recommend standard CP mix 1:1 perlite:washed-peat, top dress with pure peat (sifted for best result) about 1cm thick on the surface. Seedlings don't need drainage, a plastic clear food container with lid will do the job well. Once they have 4+ tiny carnivorous leafs, you can start feeding them with crushed fish flakes. Feed regularly to boost their growth but don't over feed. Cheers, Willy

Oh my sphagnum isn't live (that I know of), it's just the regular dried bagged stuff. Either way though it doesn't sound necessary so I'll leave it out.
Regarding the washing of peat, uh... how? The consistency looks a lot like dirt. Wouldn't it just get muddy if I wash it? And how do you sift wet peat?

Too funny, I Just ordered drosera seeds too And I was debating between (dead) sphagnum moss and peat as well... Sarah, did you see the article, on the site mentioned above, about how to start the seeds? Sound a lot like I start my AV seeds (feeding is a bit different though ) Im Just working on clearing enough space for a dedicated CP setup

LOL WillyCKH, didn't realize i bought them from you! Guess that leaves you open for questions on how to grow them like, how warm can the seed(ling)s tolerate? i am thinking of putting them in a south window, if i don't close the terrarium all the way, they'll be warm, but shouldn't cook....

Thank you, please note that if you have purchased the tokaiensis, I have made a mistake and it should be D. Natalensis instrad A good temperature range would be 20-25c, I don't recommend anything warmer than 28c. Cheers, Willy

Yay! After starting to wonder what I could have done wrong, today I spotted three tiny sprouts Drosera capensis narrow won the race. 10 days. Now I just need to keep them alive...

Yay! That's exciting. Mine are only at day 4, so nothing yet. I still peer into the container every day hoping to see some green, even though I know it's impossible for them to come up this quickly. What conditions do you have yours under?
