This grows every year by a pine tree in my yard but it's just this one lonely plant.

Yes that is Viola tricolor and they are related to pansies and sometimes called wild pansies. They also go by the nickname Johnny Jump Up. Every year for the past few years now, I have dug up one of those and placed it into a pot so I can enjoy it before the lawn mower takes care of them. This year I have my eye on two in particular. I will have to post a pick of them later once they are potted up for the season. dvg

Yes you can grow them year round in the house if you can give them a cooler room and some artificial light. The flowers are edible too. dvg
