I think I'm gonna bring back some orchid mounts from the orchid nurseries here, because I can't find them anywhere in Alberta, and I'm too lazy to pay for shipping for them.

I used to put smuggled plants in a pile of dirty underwear in my baggage but maybe they've gotten wise to that. Also in your pockets should be safe for small stuff. You can just say you picked a plant up by the roadside and forgot about it. A big potted plant would be difficult to account for. Maybe if you say it's a service plant?

Hmmm... I was going to take a small orchid or plumeria, and fold some clothing over it like I would normally fold clothing. Do they open the bags that go underneath the plane?

Is there any way you can find out? Do they do random bag checks?

On one trip, we bought some seeds in Maui and declared them at the airport. They had a stamp on the package that stated they had been inspected for import into the continental US States. We went to secondary inspection and had the seeds cleared but the people in front of us with the inspected plumeria and orchids had them confiscated. You will have no chance of getting any plants in to the country that you just picked up on a visit to a nursery. If you try to smuggle them in, you could be subjected to fines.
Making a trip from Maui to the Big Island just to see an orchid nursery could end up more trouble and money than it is worth. You would have to fly into Hilo and rent a car. You could always make a side trip to Volcanoes National Park, but the lava stopped flowing into the ocean 2 years ago.

Yah, I was on the big island a year ago. Shame on me for not knowing about Leilani

IMHO just a visit to Leilani even without getting any plants would be more than worth it. Hopefully you could get to meet Sam and maybe work out the details of ordering from him in the future.

Yah, that would be really cool to do. I've found an orchid nursery that seems good, so I might go there to discover which orchids I really like and see if I can find them in Canada when I'm back.

How abut you ask them if they're willing to provide paperwork if the order is big enough. How big $$ does the order have to be to make it worth their while ??

Yah, that another option. I'll have a chat with them and find out if that's possible when I get there this week.

I'm looking at the government website right now, but they're not too specific on anything, maybe I'll call. Can I bring sterile flasks back with orchids in them? There's a place here that sells them.
