I would definitely love to try, though I have never grown ant plants before, so others might be more qualified than I.

Nobody is more qualified than anyone else. The fact that you want to grow it and willing to share some of your growing experience then that's good enough.
I really like what people are sharing and I don't want it to stop. Keep it up everyone.

If we can just drive them across then that makes things fairly easy but I'm not sure if it's legally doable without phytosanitary certification. Houseplants imported from the continental U.S. and Hawaii may be exempted from regular documentation requirements because the risk of introducing quarantine pests into Canada via these commodities is considered lower. Houseplants are usually tropical or semi-tropical ornamental plants that are grown or intended to be grown indoors. Examples of eligible and non-eligible plants are provided in Appendix 7.
In order to qualify for the exemption, the houseplants must be for personal use and must accompany the importer at the time of entry into Canada. The total number of plants must not exceed 50 houseplants.
Eligible houseplants originating from the continental U.S. do not require a Permit to Import nor a Phytosanitary Certificate. Houseplants originating from Hawaii do not require a Permit to Import; however, the plants must be completely free from all soil, soil-related matter and growing media, and must be accompanied by a Phytosanitary Certificate issued by the USDA or its designate.from here: www.inspection.gc.ca/plants/plant-protection/directives/imports/d-08-04/eng/1323752901318/1323753560467If they are CITES listed that's a whole other matter.

Hi morphman-that's a great resource. As you say the certificates would be expensive. If you're up to a group order in the spring, I'd be interested in sharing expenses. I'm sure there's lots of interesting plants we could think of in the mean time. Thanks for the offer.
As for the houseplant method, it's really legit, I looked it up on the Canadian government website. I had a friend bring me a big cactus cutting across the border and he declared it with no problems and no papers.

Lloyd,
I will be getting more plants next year and I think I'm gonna try to just drive them across. If we know anyone close to a border we can send the plants to them and go pick them up. My mind is now racing with ideas and I see a divorce in my near future. lol

i grow some schomburgkia splendens, which are orchids. i dont really know if it counts, but some members of the genus have symbiotic relationships with ants. Im not sure if my plant is one of these species, but i can say that it likes very high light levels and lots of warmth. also, I would love to try and grow some other ANTPLANTS!

There are services that have warehouses at border crossings. They can hold packages at the border or deal with customs and mail it in Canada.

That vaguely rings a bell. We can definitely look into it. See guys, putting our minds together is already yielding results
