...Anyone know where I can get this??? I've been to pretty much every garden centre in the GTA and no one has it. I got some larger rocks at a local pet store but they are impossible to crush. Any info would be appreciated, thanks.

Are you looking for pebble or smaller size lava rock ?
Turface seem to be made of lava rock but it is only a bit bigger than pool silica sand.
I had difficulty finding some here too and had to make a few calls.
At first, I found some sold under the name 'schultz aquatic plant soil' and then under the name 'Turface'. Turface is usually use for baseball field.
Good luck.

"Schultz Aquatic Plant Soil" is expanded clay pellets. It's great for CPs and I got some at Humber Nurseries a couple of years ago. Sheridan also told me they sell it at their Mississauga location. For crushed lava rock, maybe try the Toronto Bonsai Society.

Hi Amanitovirosa - I'd try hydroponic stores. If they don't have it, they might have alternatives. I know in the States I can get Growstone which is a recycled glass foam, it's an artificial pumice. Not a bad little product, and I use it in place of perlite. They have larger sizes that better simulate landscaping lava rock, which has long been popular with hydroponic growers. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like they ship north of the border yet. But I am sure Canadian hydroponic stores will have something useful. Good luck!

Can Tire had lava rock for BBQ in bags last year here (cheap), it's the only place I can get lava rock in Nova Scotia. It is a little on the large size but the smaller pieces are great. Larger sizes are good for in the bottom of pots and for addition to orchid media. It's nice and clean but I rinsed it really well anyhow in case there were salts of some sort or another. Works great. www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/barbecue-lava-rock-value-bag-7-lb-0851286p.html#.Vh0-hVDrExg

Speaking about lava rock. I actually have three big pieces of lava rock that i bought at Big Als. As mentioned here, I was trying to break it into smaller pieces. But seriously...with a regular hammer I wasn't able to break it into pieces at all. I guess u really need a sledge hammer for this? How the heck is this thing so light yet so strong.
Anyways... if anyone is interested in these big rocks for growing their pings... you can have it for free if u are in the Mississauga/hamilton area.

Forget about breaking them up, I tried with a 12 lb sledge. You'd probably need some kind of a press.......lost cause.

Don't give up on GrowStones. My local hydroponics store in Ottawa carries them.

...I have been trying different methods of crushing the available, large lava chunks/pieces. I can do it but it's too time consuming and am now building that press I mentioned before. Takes me about an hour and a half to crush that BBQ bag, with this press I'll be able to do it in about 10 minutes! Happy Growing!
