Today I declared my King Henry Flytrap officially dead. He went into winter a small plant, newly purchased just that summer. He was not a vigorous plant when I bought him from the nursery but I thought he might do better living under my care. He spent winter outside against a south wall with the rest of my hardy carnivorous plants. No sign of life, just moss. My B52 is just a mini plant right now, more like a miniature version. What is really doing well is the no name pot of grocery store flytraps.
Did I make a mistake in leaving my expensive flytraps outdoors over winter? Any tips, suggestions and condolences welcome.

I've had flytraps survive in a well-mulched bog in Toronto but I don't think they can survive a hard freeze all the way through the pot. Lots of people put them in the fridge for the winter.

The king is dead, long live the king!
Its a double edged sword, I covered mine and I almost killed my Sarrs due to the lack of air flow and what not. Then again we did have a few really cold snaps on the island this winter.
I've seen some fancy VFT from Hawaii Botanical at some garden centers Dinter's, Cannor and Blenkinsop possibly more. Oh in Parksville there is Cultivate which some times has CP's too. That is if you are wanting to replace the royal VFT.

My VFT's usually survive a few hard freezes each winter.

I will likely replace the King should I see one. I have never been to the Parksville nursery. More spots to search out.
I will have to figure out what to do this winter as I don't want a bunch of little crosses in my pots after winter. Are flytraps hard to germinate from seed?

If it looks dead uproot it the rhizome should be firm and white..if this is the case replant it cause the plant is ok....for now lol! keep your routine its working If you get a brown and mushy rhizome toss it cause the plant is indeed dead. I lost 2 Typicals and a Big Jaws VFT and they all had the brown and mushy rhizome and there is no comeback it will not grow again... toss it
I am germinating VFT seeds now,you need patience it can be between 13 days and 3 months, even then its 4 to 5 years to grow the plantlet to adulthood but no they are not hard to germinate spread them on moist media and keep it that way not waterlogged Keep in sun or AI lights I use led's(12 hours or a combination of AI and sunlight) and it germinated drosera seeds, made my Big Jaws make 4 traps,my Typicals grew like weeds 7 leaves on 1 and 8 on the other it also made my D Capensis go from 3 leaves to over 12!

Are flytraps hard to germinate from seed? Not even a little bit. I just thow last years seeds in a bunch of pots and put them outside with everything else. They all germinate and are large enough to overwinter within one season. They don't require start so don't waste your time with it. Freezing really isn't a problem, all mine stayed outside last winter and froze solid half a dozen times without any death. Avoid water on top of the plant when it is going to freeze as the water works its way into the crown of the plant and as it freezes and thaws it destroys the plant.

Dennis and Hal. Upon your suggestions, I have done a check of the pot. It is as if there was never a plant there. No rhizomes, just clumps of moss. I have to bid the King good bye.
I believe H2O might have the reason I failed. I seem to recall finding the pots dry, and in my haste to remoisten them, I may have glugged the water into the pot. Then it probably froze.
Seeds and good lights seem doable. Another challenge for the future. Thank you for the input all.

Lucst, my fellow enabler. You are very kind to offer to be my personal shopper. I think if I am able to get a Henry II, then you should get one too. Just so that we can share tales from the kingdom. I will ensure that I have money in my change purse to pay your coffers. Are you ever at VIU? I am in the Bookstore in the Art Dept.

I'm a 20 min walk from VIU, and it used to be my second home.

In my case like a fool I misted the media surface,it froze solid,soil.roots.and plant lol !! that was me trying dormancy and not fully understanding it.This year I have 2 Pings 2 if the other takes root. this year for dormancy I plan to put the plants in a styrofoam cooler with a little pure water in a unheated shed(the shed of death for plants in my care lol) !! I am trying it first to see if the water freezes if it does I need a plan B

Dennis, if your plants froze in that shed last year a cooler won't help. It will get to the same temperature as the shed in a few days. Are you putting pings into dormancy? Are they temperate species?

the ping is a hybrid....Aphrodite I went to straighten a few leaves to plant it an another plant broke away for me its like it already seperated it just needed a touch to break free lol !! it seperated a i was unpacking it and some roots went with it so I might get 2! I read it goes dormant and I read because its a hybrid it does not thank goodness my 2 ceph's dont need dormancy or am I wrong?

Aphrodite rarely goes dormant for me and when it does you just withhold water. It doesn't need a cold treatment like sarrs.
