Leaves in a bag won't do it. The bog stays warm because there is heat coming from the ground below, trapped by the leaves on top. A bag of leaves will have cold coming through all sides and it will freeze right through.
I have had VFTs last a few years in a mulched bog, but if they're potted, the best method is to bag them and put them in the fridge.

From deep freeze to inundation - up to 50mm of rain expected in Southern Ontario starting this afternoon. On the plus side, we can give the RO filters a break and catch some rainwater.

It looks like I can finally belong to this thread! Mind you it has been colder earlier this winder, about -10 C, and it is only about 0 C it has being snowing for 50+ hours now with about 15-20 cm of snow now which is a lot for the Island. Althogh it is the wet heavy snow that has been snapping branches and what not. Justin, Brad and who ever else is in BC must also be enjoying the weather. Also lloyd and Hal I may have misplaced those Sarrs I promised you...

Those sarr's poking up through the snow look pretty good. My "leather-leaves" are hanging out in the garage looking dried up. I misted them a bit and threw some fresh snow on top. Hopefully they'll pull through. Probably a month more of deep freeze.

I've only seen signs of drying out on the rhodo a month back but once it warmed up and rained the leaves perked right up. I should have no fear of anything being under watered. Good luck with your Sarrs nonetheless lloyd.

Love that photo, Luc. The sarrs look like they've sent up snorkels that are gasping for air.

And we're back to deep freeze in the GTA. Temps are dropping from -14C mow down to -20C tonight. Long range is for another 2 weeks of sub-zero. Ian, Lloyd - I reckon you should bring the brass monkeys in today and set them next to your Sarrs...

Are they dormant or dead?

Please, please send us some warm air. -5C would be okay, -10C tolerable, -15C/-20C (persistent) in late February is just obscene.

Cook: if my "winter" killed them, then I'd weep for all of our non-BC friends on this forum. They are dormant... or at least should be.
canuk1w1: I'm nit sure if I have ever felt -15C.

... canuk1w1: I'm nit sure if I have ever felt -15C. You've never been on the Peak chair at Whistler - especially when it shuts down due to high winds ;-) Jersey Cream on the Blackcomb side has some spots where the chairs will deflect almost 30 degrees to look at. It doesn't feel anywhere near as cold at the top of Whistler or Black (even when the bulb is down to -20C) as it does downtown Toronto at -15C. Squamish is looking really good now.

I was in cold lake AB 1 year and in winter it was -32 C with the windchill it was close to -60 C we were not allowed outside for more than 5 minutes at a time! My gloves kept freezing stiff is a few minutes I put them on a heat vent and took a dry, warm pair....I did this all day my snowmobile pants were pointless I was freezing cold anyway!
