For years I've had trouble with the aquatic utrics. They did well at first and then died off slowly. My last gibba did the same thing and in disgust I just threw the last threads (almost invisible) into 2 plastic plant trays with the CP's. It loves it! Growing like crazy. Refuses to die with no care at all except to fill the tray for the other CP's. I'm going to try some other species.

I had some problems with mine too. I was growing it on a north facing window for two years. Every winter, the plant was doing buds and come back from them in spring. That could have been alright. My problem did come from the fact that I put some sphagnum in my bowl. Every time I watered it, the plant was caught by the sphagnum and bring to the bottom of the bowl ... I should have kept it in pure water ... Now, I let it dry when I built my dedicated room. Good to know it work well for you Lloyd. I'll perhaps try it this way another time. I know you know that but you'll now have to take care of it's invasiveness

Hi Lloyd - I'd always heard that U. gibba was easy, but it sounds like it's only easy when it's treated as such. That's awesome! I'll have to get some and toss it into the tray.

I've grown in in shot glasses, small coke bottles, and fishbowls. If you can keep the algae down and maintain about a cm or so of water above the substrate, it will usually take hold and flourish. Also, I still have lots of it available for SASE, please PM me if interested!

I saw this impossibly green bud like thing coming up the side of my D. petiollaris complex (sort of like D. paradoxa) pot. I finally took a look at it and it's a U. gibba flower-bud or cleistogamous flower. For years I've watched my U. gibba die only to have it flourish and flower by being totally ignored and neglected. It just grows and grows in the bottom of the plastic terrarium amongst algae and mould, occasionally almost drying up.

Just had my first gibba flower ever. Ignoring them is the way to go. Cute little flower, hard to get a good picture as it was growing out of a tray next to a pot.

I forgot to mention, if anyone can trace their gibba back to my collection, then it is a Hungarian strain that I purchased from an ebay vendor located in Budapest.

Hi Lloyd - Congrats! I too have trouble with some of the "weedy" species. It doesn't matter how easy a plant is for others, when you find the conditions that work it's equally gratifying. Nice work. It's encouraging to hear too because I think I'm going to try this one soon. Get it, ignore it, and enjoy it.

I didn't really check. The flower dried up to a little nubbin.
