I don't understand why places like Home Depot sells VFT during the winter, and on top of that they are all bone dry and more or less dead.

Again, money talks.
There was plenty of VFT available for Christmas ... it must be the remaining plants. At least, when they sell them at Easter, the probability of keeping them alive are a little bit bigger.

Actually you can usually pick up the plants/pots for almost nothing if you take them to customer service and say they are dead.

There was a place at the mall selling typically for ten bucks! I was very surprised at the price, but the plants were fairly healthy.

That's so sad but even thought it's a sale almost 7 buck is not worth it where I get my VFT they are $5 and they are always wet expt for a huge lack in light .

Take them to the customer service person and casually say they are dead but that you want the pot for a loonie. Or maybe say the plant might be Ok and offer a toonie. Act like you don't really care if they accept your offer or not. If they don't, make the same offer in a few days.

I'm just about to head to the north end of town so I guess I'll give it a shot.
