Is it a good time to start VFTs from seeds considering they need winter dormancy? My concern is that they might not get a chance to grow into a healthy plant before the winter sets in.

I would wait until there is four weeks left of the winter and then put them outside and then they will grow fine but if you want just grow em indoors that is better cuz you can always see them

If you grow them inside, VFt do not necessarily need to go dormant in their first growing year if your start them now.

Thanks, I'll try that. Would that also be applicable to TC flytraps I purchased from Lowe's about a month ago? They are fairly young - not more than 8-10 weeks old I would think.

Vinny, I think the motto they use is anything to make a buck!

You can start vft seeds anytime if you plan to grow them under lights. Three pots of these vft seedlings were sown on August 12 and i started to notice pretty good germination of the seed by August 25. They are now trapping and digesting the live tropical springtails that i've been depositing on top of their growing medium. These were grown inside sealed ziplock bags inside a propation dome with a seedling heating mat under the tray. A single 42 watt CFL light was just above the progation dome for lighting. Once the seeds started to germinate, i opened the ziplocks to allow more air into the seedlings, and when they got a few leaves on them i opened the vents in the propagation dome to allow even more air flow and evaporation to occur. dvg

Hi Doug - Nice little seedlings. Makes me think I might need to try some VFT from seed.

Whoa, these seedlings are pretty big for being only 1 month old, I think I give mine too much light because they are older and much smaller.

Actually, now that I think about it, can anyone recommend a good source for different types of VFT seeds? I see mostly typical or unlabeled seed types. Is there somewhere good to a variety of VFT types (in addition to BCP)?

These are germinated without stratification... About 110 seedlings here. Plus some Drosera in the corner... Should be fun to grow these up! Gabriel

Those vft seedlings are looking great Peat! What are you feeding them? I'm trying to get more springtail cultures going so that my vft seedlings will have something to munch on until they are big enough to take D. melanogaster and then D. hydei flightless fruit flies. I believe that frequent feeding at this early stage of their development will hasten their growth. dvg

There are springtails living in the soil, so they usually get by on chatching those. I don't really live feed my plants, so they will probably get the bloodworm system when they are bigger.
