It's about $10 if I remember correctly. It doesn't come in smaller packages.

Well I guess I'll be growing CP's for the rest of my life and then pass on the knowledge (along with the sand) to the next generation!
Do all CP's use sand? I have 5 varieties of sundew seeds and 1 ping. Once I gain more experience, I look forward to using my sand to grow more varieties of different types of CP's.

The African sundews don't need sand. Peat and perlite 50/50 is fine. Pygmy and tuberous dews, maybe some binatas, will benefit from sand.
Temperate pings will do fine in peat/perlite. Mexican pings prefer a more mineral-based mixture.
So I don't think you need that silica sand for success with the plants you have. Water, light and feeding are more important.

The exact list that I have is:
- Drosera Alicia - Drosera dielsiana - Drosera Capensis - Drosera Binata Extrema - Pinguicula lusitanica
Would the Binata that I was given do well is just peat/perlite or would it benefit from sand?

I took only 1/2 of the Rona sand home in a Rona bucket because it was so heavy. I gave so much away and used so much that now I'm almost finished the bucket and will have to get some more some day. So if you can get it home and have space to store it, get the whole bag.

If you take half the bag will they charge half the price? Maybe your other half is still in the store for me to purchase

If you take half the bag will they charge half the price? Maybe your other half is still in the store for me to purchase Just say Lloyd sent you. ;D I just came from Rona and I mentioned your name! They said "yes, Lloyd has already been here and he took all of our silica sand. Sorry, we don't have any left for an amateur like you!" lol Actually they said they don't have any. I think I like asked every person in the store and I also said a friend said Rona is the best supplier for silica sand. They just shot the idea down and said they dont have it. Then I also went to Canadian Tire, Home Depot, and Lowes to no success. I did manage to determine that Lowes is the cheapest for 4" pots at 28 cents a piece! Saved over a dollar! yay! But ya... Lloyd, you mentioned you were buying some sand. You also live in Toronto (right?). Do you think I could buy some off you? I'm so discouraged about looking for sand. When I started my shopping spree I was so excited. I picked up the peat moss easily, picked up the pots easily, but the sand... just ruined the whole night. I spent over 3 hours searching! Sorry about my complaining, just had to vent somewhere I think I'll try the peat/perlite mixture first and then if that fails, hopefully I'll be able to get some sand along with new seeds (because the perlite/peat mixture killed my other seeds). Anyways, I'm going to play with peat and water (wash it). I'm going to try the method of soaking it a few times to get rid of all the nutrients to avoid moss (then I'll use the nutrient rich water to water my other non CP that need nutrients and don't get it from bugs!) ...I'm already feeling better just thinking about playing with peat and water! ...Doesn't take much to make me happy!

Justin are there Lordco's in your area? Ive heard of them being able to order it in. You could also contact pool supply places as I believe silica sand is used as a filter. Possibly even landscape supply stores might sell it.

If I buy some more at the Rona (Stockyard one on St. Clair used to have it.), I'll share it with anyone who wants to pick some up. I couldn't find anywhere else in Toronto that had any and I looked at all the places including landscape places, pool supply stores, industrial suppliers, all the big box stores and anything else you could mention. If you want to go to Hamilton or further you can find some.

Hey 31drew31, unfortunately we don't have Lordco's in Toronto (not that I'm aware of).
Lloyd, keep me posted on the success of your sand. Do you live close to a subway station?
I'll keep my eyes peels for silica sand, but after what Lloyd said about it only being at Rona and then not finding it at Rona is a little bit discouraging. I don't live in downtown Toronto, and I don't really want to carry 40kg with me all the way home which takes an hour and a half with public transit from Union Station.
