Hi all, I'm NEW here and new to growing VFT. Been browsing the VFT threads and I'm very impressed with the VFT photos photos posted here. I hope my plant would grow like that one day but first having it survive and grow healthy. I bought this plant from Home depot on Tuesday. Since I am a first time grower, I am not sure if it is a good idea to replant it. So right now, it is in its original tiny pot, bout 2 inches high. Media is peat moss and i don't know what else. The plant has a baby. Also, it hasn't been that warm here, around 10 oC daytime high and crazy weather fluctuations. Is it a good idea to put it outside now? Also, not very sunny. Should I leave it indoors with a lamp? I saw some kinda insects crawling along the traps. From what i know now, it's thrips. How should i deal with these buggers? Or should I worry bout my growing conditions first? I'm looking forward to grow my plant successfully. Any advice, lots of it, would be much appreciated.

HEy IT's RAy
Congratulation on you first cp there are a few steps before taking you plant outside but you should first get the plant started indoors you have to get it custom to your temps. looks nice anyways since you are a indoor grower for right now try a windowsill I have been extremeness successful with it . for the bug you can try a drosera (sundew) I never had then but you'll never know ;D
P.S thats sphagnum

Hi, and welcome.
I haven't had them, but a search on this forum shows several methods of dealing with thrips. Another good resource is flytrapcare.com.
I was wondering who the nursery was. Just for giggles, I did a UPC lookup. 9greenbox sells VFTs through Amazon.com under this UPC. Makes me wonder about the 'Product of Canada' on the label.
The low price on the label makes me wonder about quality control at the nursery. Keehn's and other online sources charge $6.50 or more for the same plant, shipped bare root. Watch carefully for mould on the plant and soil. If it wasn't properly cleaned coming from tissue culture, this could be a problem for you. Did the thrips come with the plant?

Welcome to the site! That's a pretty small but nice looking flytrap. I haven't had to deal with bugs on mine so I cant help you there. I bought my first successful VFT over a year ago. Last summer I transplanted and split it into 3 pots. All 3 survived winter dormancy and are growing great. Like you I have highs of around 10C with lows of -4-9C right now. I put them out on the deck in the morning and bring them in at night until it is above freezing. The leaves burned a bit from the sun, but the new ones coming up look great.

Plant seems to be doing fine. I don't see anymore thrips. It got a little bit greedy and caught a bug bigger than what it was suppose to. Just thought that it was funny how the insect legs were dangling out of the trap

***UPDATE and a question...***My home depot plant seems to be doing great but then again am not an expert. It's been getting plenty of sunlight (though this week its been rainy). Some of the older leaves did burn a lil bit and the new leaves are looking good. I dont even need to catch insects for it because its seem to be doing a fabulous job on its own . It even started flowering but i have already snipped the bud as I've read that flowering takes a lot of energy from the plant. My question: My plant had been so good at catching flies that almost every single new trap has a fly in it. I've read that one shouldn't overfeed VFTs, but am not doing that because the plant is doing it. Could this harm my plant?

The plant will look after itself.

Many of my VFT traps are full right now, and last summer they were almost always closed. The plants thrived and survived their dormancy this winter. I've had to remove about 15 flower stalks from my 3 pots this week. They just keep popping up like crazy. Just keep it watered and in good light, and like Lloyd said, it will definitely take care of itself.

Looking good! The flower might set it back a bit, but it should be fine.

@devon: I've already cut the bud. Missed that, sorry. You might actually more divisions now. I find that flower stalks encourage the plant to divide.
