Hey guys, so the title is pretty self explanatory, I just wanted to know how other people deal with carpet moss. If you don't know what I'm talking about, here's a description and a picture: www.blueplanetbiomes.org/carpet_moss.htmSo anyways, one of my bogs is filling up with it. My other minibogs that are drier don't have this problem, but in my temperate ping bog it is starting to grow everywhere. Is the only way to remove it by stripping off the top layer of peat and putting down a fresh topping? What have you guys tried?

I strip it off the top and then put back in some more substrate, but it's a temporary fix and it grows back even quicker the second time. I guess I completely repot and toss the old substrate about every 8-12 months.

yup! Nothing else works... eventually ir compacts the top sufrace and plants like VFTs start to suffer and can't deal with the lack of oxygen to their roots. The best thing to do is rip it off. You might want to consider using a bark mulch (pine?) as a covering. The VFTs have evolved to enjoy the acidity of pine needles in their media. I can imagine it to look pretty cool as well.

I use 16 Grit silica sand on the tops of anything bottom watered and I rarely get any moss problems.
