Hi All, I'm brand new to this (I read that Toronto Star article last year and have thinking about it all winter I'm planning on doing one or two container bogs this year in my garden (just east of Toronto). After reading several posts I will probably over-winter them in my un-heated garage. So... I have two questions (well to start with anyways 1) For a brand-new bog, when is a good time to plant (I'm thinking its still a little early, as the nights are still getting quite cold for an immature garden) 2) What are good starter plants? From what I've seen in the posts so far looks like s. purpurea, dews and venus fly traps (also could someone tell a newbie what dews are? thx) Thanks everyone for taking the time to help a newbie!

That article was about my microbogs. Anytime is fine. Now is perfect. These plants are temperate and these temperatures are good to stimulate root growth.
See the thread just under this one for my suggestions/instructions.
Any sarr's are good. Temperate dews (Sundews=Drosera filiformis/intermedia are easiest), VFT's, temperate pings (Pinguicula) are all good for outside. A bright sunny spot protected from animals is best. I overwinter in an unheated garage but it's connected to the house so it stays between +3 to -3C all winter. Severe freezes, especially freeze/thaw cycles will kill the plants. If the garage is too warm (above say 10C) for too long, you might get mould also fatal.

Our garage is also attached to the house (but is unheated) so should be fine. Thanks for the explanations! I'm sure I'll have a lot more questions, though I am trying to find the answers in the posts first--there is a ton of information here!
