I just saw this thread - that's an awesome bog you have there Jay! A question, though. I don't know much about pH, but wouldn't pine needles make the soil acid? I use distilled water for my pot plants, and I assumed that the pH would be neutral, however peat is acid, right? Do CPs like acidity?

Distilled water is actually around a pH of 5.8 from what I've seen. I couldn't tell you why though...

Yes pretty much all cp like either acid or alkaline conditions , i think there are a few exceptions . I just expanded with another bog and a larger greenhouse ,thanks for the compliments

DI water absorbs a tiny bit of CO2 and because there are no salts to "buffer" or maintain the pH it drops below 7. As soon as you add it to soil though the soil tends to overwhelm its pH and readjusts it to the soil pH

Very interesting. Thanks. I might put in a bog some day, but one of my main worries was keeping the water level up. That mulch is a great idea!
