Hal, (or anyone else), I have a Sartorius analytical to 1/10 mg, if you want me to divvy up the powder for you in return for SASE (PM me first). I should've bought from Rare Exotics (thankyou everyone for your advice!) but I'll split up my 100 mg, pre weigh into packets for the fridge and make 40 mL batches as needed like Lloyd suggested. I trust it dissolves ok. So, just to recap, first a drop of soap in water and soak seeds in fridge 24h, remove soapy water and soak 24h in 250 ppm GA3, remove, rinse and sow by pipet?

Brian, I don't know if anyone mentioned this, but GA3 dissolves better in rubbing alcohol than it does in water. Lloyd can probably give you more info on that.

I was wondering. U of T medical supplier sells both the acid and the salt (both $$$) and I'm not sure which is normally sold by seed places. I would add methanol dropwise to my 10 mg until it dissolves then top up to 40 mL and mix, but I'll wait until I hear from lloyd.

The GA3 from both Gardens North and rarexoticseeds comes in the dry granular crystalline form,(I've ordered it from both places berfore) packaged up in little zip-locked plastic packets.

stupid question- where is GA3 "from" like natural sources or is it an unnatural synthetic??

www.phytotechlab.com/pdf/PlantGrowthRegulatorsII.pdfI always check this file before I mix stuff. It suggests ethanol for GA3. I use the 95% ethanol which you can buy in Quebec, because it is for dirinking and so has no possibly toxic additives. Sorry for possible misinformation: I didn't mean you had to soak the seeds before the soak in GA3. I just meant that if you could get any cold stratification in before the GA3 soak it would likely enhance germination. I always do both unless I'm really pressed for time. The Sartorius scale must be nice. Is it at work or at home? I think they are pretty expensive. Gibberellic Acid is made by fungal fermentation.

Lloyd, sorry to be a bother, could you walk me through the steps then? The Sartorius is at my work site, its worth a couple of grand new. I guess the other way to split up 100 mg of GA3 is the mirror and razor blade method.. tap out a neat pile on a mirror, divide in half then quarters then eighths. Each eighth portion goes in 50 mL DI water. No need for a balance.

10 mg. GA3, add a drop or two of ethanol to dissolve, then fill up to 40cc with distilled water. Keep in fridge. You only need a cc or two for each batch of seeds, just enough to cover them. A drop of Tween 20 or detergent wets the seeds so they don't all float on top or stick to the sides. I throw out the used solution. Makes 250 ppm.
