First snow of the year. It's 4C now, supposed to go to 1C tonight. So far the VFT's and sarr's look fine although the dews are all pretty well dormant.

Okay next stupid question, How do you tell if your dews are dormant ? Do they look dead?

Intermedia and filiformis form these sort of bud like things at the base of the plant that are a dark brown green colour and the rest of the leaves die off.

Thank you so much Llyod and Rick. I think my Drosera nitidiula(SP?) x pulchela (pygmy) seems to be doing as Llyod explained, yet it still has a flower stalk on it . Is this normal or riight? It seems to be happy so I guess it is fine. I have been trying to get a picture but dang it it is dark when I leave for work and dark when I get home, sheesh. I will try again this weekend. Thanks again guys for all your help!!!

Oh no he is inside, as are all my dews and yes I do have lighting inside. I realized how dumb that sounded about 10 mins after I posted but was already on my way to work. Sorry for the misunderstanding. I only overwinter my Sarrs and VFT's outside and then they are mulched also with pine needles or oak leaves (which worked out very well too). Are Llyods Dews outside? In the snow?

My outside dews: filiformis, intermedia, rotundifolia look pretty ratty, brown with hibernacula. The sarr's and VFT's still look pretty nice. One little S. purp is turning an intense purple colour now. The only sundew that looks good is a spatulata that got there by mistake and is turning a nice autumn red.

I just moved my outside plants behind the fence for the winter. Despite a week of -9C weather, they look pretty good. The sarr's and VFT's look nice and green with good turgour. I covered the smaller pots with 2 heavy plastic containers each and the big pots with heavy duty plastic garbage containers. There is ice all over the surface and the drainage tubes are full of ice, too. One big pot seems to have a small leak but hopefully they will be Ok for the winter. The new owners of the house are letting me keep the plants there for the winter. I guess I'll check them out again in late March or early April. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

One thing I learned (the hard way) from my big sarracenia loss back around 1999-2000 was that if the plants freeze, they seem to look good until things thaw and they are supposed to start growing... then they turn to mush.
I hope that yours will make it for you.

Rick- I would submit that freezing isn't so much the true killer in them cases as it is the subsequent freeze-thaw cycle- the trick is to not let the thaw then get re-frozen- this is NOT suggesting that they can take unlimited low temps but not too far below zero is not a definite death sentence- tho any significant fluctuation in temperature isn't a good thing over the winter from what I have seen

Mab: I wasn't referring to the plants not being able to take the lower temps... I didn't get my bog covered this year until after a few nights of -10 and I'm sure that what's there will be fine next spring. I was referring to the fact that when my plants died back in 2000, they looked fabulous until it was time to wake up and start growing. That's when they went to mush.

Oh yeah, that is true, seen it happen a few times with VFTs sadly, they look decent until they just turn to mush right before your eyes- I can 100% agree with that being the case unfortunately

I'm not too concerned with my VFT's. I can crank them out on the TC overwinter. I'd hate to lose my sarr's though. I'm sure the local dews will be Ok.
