Rick When you say the mesh, are you talking about the plastic stuff, I guess like construction fencing? If not what type will you use? I think that is a wonderful idea for my barrel bogs because pine needles are messy(although alot better than oak leaves) Thanks Kelly sorry for the typo's just got my nails done

I was thinking of using the same stuff I use for my "fence" that surrounds my bog. It's a fine mesh made out of plastic with roughly 1/2 x 1/2 "holes". Chicken wire, the construction material you mentioned or even burlap would likely work.

How do you plan on supporting it off the plants?(in the case of burlap) Would the burlap be to sufficating? Sorry these may be dumb questions, but I honestly don't know. Just worried about my Sarr's Thanks for all your advice Rick and sorry for hijacking the thread. Thanks Kelly

I used burlap under a pile of hay one year... no problem there, other than some spilled seed from the hay into the garden. Now that was a weeding chore.
Anyway, I put the "grid" and needles right on the plants. They don't seem to mind at all.

Thanks for the info Trying to remember what all you have outside, Sarr's and VFT's? Do you have any Dew's? Your winters make mine seem like Disney Land, but I still worry. lol Would supports reduce the insulation effect? I tend to think so but have no clue? Again I apologize for hijacking this thread. Thanks Kelly

Marky- yeah just leave it there, water it a LITTLE every once in a while- don't want it BONE dry, but NOT wet either
Kelly- I have pitcher plants, temperate pings and temperate sundews out there myself. I would almost suggest asking someone down your way what they do- I would think you could get away with only a little layer of mulch, using pine needles keeps it pretty airy but too many of them might tend to smother plants in our less-harsh conditions

My VFT's look pretty good outside so far, even the little baby ones look nice and red.
