You're definitely right about leaving them outside if they're exposed. I've overwintered VFT outdoors in my bog garden for years without a single loss. They were frozen from December until April. A study done by a fellow member in which I took part showed that the temps under 10-12" of pine needles is -0.1C, so they weren't frozen by much, but the below freezing temps were consistent.

I'd like a colder area but that's the coldest part of the house and it seemed to work Ok for the S. leucophylla last year. I'm trying to think of a way to grow my temperate plants outside all year starting this spring.
