Using finely chopped sphagnum topped with fine fir bark seems the way to go to avoid algae growth. At lest so far.

I rarely have trouble with algae on pure LFS, myself. It seems to be a moisture issue - just a little too much causes a lot of algae growth. Depending on which species of seed you have, that extra moisture can be deadly too so I use regular drained pots with a humidity dome to maintain the right level.
