Hello everyone, I am not sure where this post belongs, but hopefully my guess is right or acceptable.
I have a tray with about an inch and a half of dry sphagnum moss that I have left by my window for about a month now.
Today, I saw red moss heads growing. This was a big surprise considering how many people have stated that they were unable to get dry sphag to grow into live sphag. I bought the bale from Terra Garden Centre.
I have read that the dry moss is sterilized before being sold, but perhaps not 100%.
I am wondering how you all grow your moss in terms of how thick your bed is. I would like to keep the moss trays as thin as possible to see if I can get more dry sphag to become live again.
Maybe people have been stating that they are unable to get green sphag to grow again? Is red moss common when growing from dry sphag?
Thanks for reading!

Hello, it's very common for dried sphagnum moss to grow again, given enough time and moisture Congrats tho, I always love seeing moss growing!

I've never had anything nice start growing from dried stuff, just occasional weeds! I also keep a couple of frosted plastic tubs with live sphagnum growing on top of water saturated peat in a lower light section of my grow space. I put trimmings into it occasionally.

Nice! Despite my best efforts, I've never been particularly successful getting grow from dried stuff. I don't think you need to have the sphagnum in a really thick layer. I also put a layer of soaked peat down on the bottom of the tub and put the live stuff on top and it does really well.
