I first fell in love with pings because of someone posting (on an orchid forum) a photo of their ping mounted on lava rock. I thought it was so beautiful, I knew if I ever got my hands on some pings, that's how I'd like to display them. I acquired a lovely group of pings from Willy in October, and tentatively put a few on lava rocks to see how they'd do. So far, they seem to like it. 1-2. P. kondoi 3-5. P. esseriana 6. P. weser (hoping to get them to strike right on the lava. Don't know if this'll work or not.) 7. Setup on entrance table. I've put all my pings on glass cake plates with domes. They have a two inch lip to hold water, and if I want extra humidity, I put the domes on for a day (and then take them off to provide air flow).

mexiping: Very nice mixed species display. I have done the same thing, but I added some perlite, vermiculite and a bit of peat between my pieces of lava. I tried strikes on bare lava and it worked when I kept the humidity high. I lost a few (almost half) afterwards as the babies did not have enough organic material to consistently hold moisture. I just added a very fine layer of peat and misted it into the lava pores. I cant see it any more, but it is there and seems to hold water longer. You could also add a bit of carpet or spag moss which has a decorative value as well. Anyways, your display looks awesome! BTW, would that be a lovely little phrag taking centre stage?

kawarthapine, Thanks for your comments and photos. You have lovely plants. I'm not quite finished with my setup. I wanted to see if the plants would be happy before really getting it look as pretty as I'd like. Plus, I have all the other pings to mount. Yes, that's a Phrag. sedenii. It bloomed in December. It's quite a sweetie.

Love the setup! I've always wanted to try something like that. So if I understand this right, you've got the rocks sitting in water at all times and you didn't add any extra medium in the holes? What's the humidity like?

What's the humidity like? Thanks! Well, I don't have a meter or anything, but when I put the dome on droplets form on the dome and run down the sides. And yes, no media added. Just rocks and water. We'll see what happens. Fun to experiment and learn. The lava rock that they are on stays moist all the time unlike the more 'holey' one the esseriana is on. Here's a photo from today. Added some decorative rocks. Oh, whoops! Gotta go to tapatalk to add photos since I don't have online photo album. Hang on. (Insert elevator music here)... Sorry for the quality. iPhone photos.

I hope this is works out! I'm always trying to find a way to put my plants in something that is functional and looks nice (I usually fail in that endeavor ).

It's still evolving, and I like the suggestion of live moss to make it look more like a natural landscape.

Mexiping:
I luv your lava rocks sitting on the bed of water-emersed pebbles.
It is almost like a miniture Japanese Zen rock garden. In your case though, the 'suteishi' (bigger nameless rocks) are actually hosts for your pings.
I have a similar bowl set up with surplus Pirouette's and it did very well until I forgot to water it for a few weeks!
Your little 'pups' look very happy. Hope they continue to grow and then flower like weeds.
