Hi everyone - So, after 5 years I finally got my hands of some D. schizandra to give a second try. I'm having the same issue I have had in the past. They do great for me in the summer, but then they rot or fade away in the winter. My grow area is getting down to 13C at night, and up to 18C in the day. My fear is that I am getting them too cold. What are the lowest temps folks here maintain this species in? I really want to make this work. I don't want to have to wait for another 5 years to try this one again. Thanks in advance for any tips!

Before I let them dry out and die they did very well in ordinary room temperature and somewhat bright light.

I have one in each of my setups from best to worst:
Room temperature, south facing filtered windowsill lighting, 50-70% humidity
21°C day 17°C night 10 inches from my T5HO, 80% humidity
Highlander terrarium 25°C day 14°C night, 80-90% humidity

Hi Apo, I grow mine in a closed glass vessel under 100% RH. There's at least 6 inches of live sphagnum in there and I keep the water level at 3 inches. The leave are small but grow on all levels. It only get diffuse ligth from the T5 in the adjacent shelves. Temperature between 18 and 26 C. At this RH and low light amount, I'm pretty sure it would die quickly if I would let the temp drop. I'm pretty convince that 13C under high RH is too low for this CP. You could only put it on a north side windows and should be alrigth. You can try your French here www.rossolis.org/article13.html

Hi Lloyd - Room temps, good. I'll give that a try. Hi Danny - You have this species in three locations?! Now, you are just bragging. Room temps for you too, thanks! Salut Shogg - Tu t'rappelez que je crois que je peux lire le français. C'était une information très utile. Merci bien!

I used to grow it in a 5 gallon tank with a glass top. Almost no airflow. It was in the basement so 18-23C, off to the end of a shelf with 4 T8s above it. Kept it moist, not drenched and sprayed it with dilute fertilizer once every month or two. The substrate was 1" of coarse stone with LFS on top. It didn't seem to have seasons, just kept on going.

Hi hal - Thanks! I know you have cultivated this species very successfully. I have my plants on live sphagnum (a slow growing species that doesn't out grow my plants), in an old, glass desiccator. So pretty well no airflow and not sodden. Makes me think the 12-13C might be part of the problem. Okay, got to pull this into the house from the highland grow room. Thanks again everyone!

Hey Ap,
I'm perhaps a bit late but I just noticed your signature update! Congratulation on the nomination. You really seem to have what's needed for the job.
Good luck!

Salut Shogg - Merci bien! You are too kind. I only hope to be a benefit to the ICPS and help improve conservation our efforts for carnivorous plants. It's wonderful to have the opportunity to do my best for carnivorous plants and growers.

Hi all - Thought I'd post an update. Brought the two sickly little plantlets up into my house from the highland growroom. Their decline seems to have slowed, but not ceased. Here is the desiccator I have them growing in. It keeps the humidity high, and the sphagnum is certainly happy in there. I think it's a decent container for this species, and the live sphagnum should be a decent growth medium. But as you can see they don't look great. The one near the bottom looks like it stands a chance. The one nearer the top of the photo seems to have died at the center. It looks worse than it did a few minutes before the photo. That's because I pulled off its leaves to do try to propagate it by floating the leaves on pure water. Here they are. Wish me luck with both remaining bits, and thanks for all of the advice everyone!
